Project Information
All,
Here are a couple of pictures of a nice blanket chest I built earlier this year for our local church auction. Wood is Western Red Cedar salvaged from the remodel of Arrowhead Stadium here in Kansas City.
The plans are available along with several video's on Tommy MacDonald's website, www.mlwwoodworking.com . Tommy does a great job walking through the project. So anyone who wants to try it go there and give it a shot. And you will probably have a few laughs along the way, too. You have probably seen Rob Young's chest here on LJ's (rwyoung), Rob did a beautiful job.
In general I would consider this project pretty simple, with the carving looking more challenging than it really is. The rest is just mortise and tenon construction.
The cedar was really not good material - it was really knotty and checked and crushed so easily it was a pain to try to get it clean, so I went the other way and left it rough, with tearout around the knots, etc. After a thin coat of shellac I slathered gel stain over it and left it somewhat grimy, I think it ended up with a nice look. Thanks, Cal
