Project Information
I just finished designing these fun and pretty little bunny ornaments to welcome in the spring and summer! I decided to make two versions of the bunnies - one to show off the beautiful richness of the maple, and the other set stained in soft pastel colors.
For the natural version, after cutting I applied a nice coat of mineral oil and let it absorb into the wood. I then sprayed them with several light coats of spray shellac to seal them. I found that after using the oil, the spray shellac worked the best as a sealer. When they were dry, I applied some beautiful crystal hot fix colored rhinestones to accent the neck design and added a pretty organza ribbon. They really look quite elegant.
For the stained version, I used DecoArt Antiquing and Staining Medium and acrylic paints in soft, pastel colors. The gel medium turns the paint into a transparent stain that allows the wood grain to show through and extends drying time so that you can blend the stain and not experience streaks, yet it doesn't raise the grain of the wood. I used two sheer coats to achieve these soft colors.
When the stain was dry, I sprayed a couple of light coats of polyester sealer on them to set the finish. I then applied hot fix rhinestone accents to their collars and again added some organza ribbon - this time in coordinating colors. I can't decide which version I like better!
These cool ornaments can be used as magnets for your refrigerator, in a wreath, tied on an Easter basket, or even hung in a window as a sun catcher. The little crystals will just sparkle in the sunlight and they can be left out all summer. I am going to use mine to decorate my little "all season tree" that I keep up all year long. It is about time to take off the penguins and polar bears and add something nice to welcome in the spring!
I had a great time designing these ornaments. The pattern and instructions are now available on my website. I hope you all enjoy them too!
