Showcase cover image for 1 Board 1 Project "bench sander" tape dispenser

Project Information

I needed a packaging tape dispenser and was all set to make a plain utilitarian one when I ran across the 1 Board 1 Project Spring Challenge, so I got inspired to get a little more creative. I suppose ChuckV's chisel rack got me thinking about relating my dispenser to the shop, and started thinking about what hand or power tools somewhat resemble the shape of a dispenser. Hmm, the bench sander kinda fit. So I started working on a design.

The 4" diameter rolls of tape set the scale of the project. It took some doing to get all of the parts cut out of a 12" x 12" board. It would have been much easier to fit a dispenser for "standard" size office tape onto the 12" x 12" board. I did have to make a few compromises to get all the parts out of that one board. There was no room for two 3" round hub parts to hold the roll of tape, so I didn't make them full circles, but the partial hub works just fine. A 3/16" brass tube makes up the axle. I also had to cut the piece that holds the serrated cutting blade out of the middle of the base, because there was no place else to get it. But the hole left in the base causes no issues and can't be readily seen.

To get my 12" x 12" board, I glued up a couple pieces of 1/2" oak stock from the home center. All of the parts were carved and cut at once with my CarveWright CNC, including slots on the back for the hub axle to slide down and forward.

The metal cutter was salvaged from a used up disposable dispenser for smaller-diameter rolls.

I thought about attaching an actual piece of sandpaper to the disk, but decided to carve a sandpaper-like surface instead. I wanted it clear that this is a wood piece and didn't want to cover or paint the surfaces. I did use some stains of various colors for accent.

So I ended up with a functional dispenser and a bit of a conversation piece, thanks to the challenge.

Dick,

I like that a lot. The 1/0 on/off buttons are a great touch!

At first I didn't think you had done that with CnC, then I read your description. Still pretty sweet.

What a great entry, very thoughtful, creative and resourceful. Love that killer disc sander table and those pretend screws. Let's hope they never change the inside diameter of the tape rolls!

I don't have a CarveWright CNC, Do you have a set of drawn plans for sale. I'd like to make one for the shop for the packing tape and one for my desk for regular scotch tape.

I don't have drawn plans, as the design was done using the CarveWright's proprietary Designer software. But I have extracted drawn plans from another project and can possibly do the same with these. It may be a few days before I can get to it. I will post a notification here.

Sure hope to see it posted as a project for other CW customers! I'm sure they will love it along with your clocks and other great projects for the CarveWright. Great job, Dick!

I'm probably going to put the project into the PatternDepot, but until then for Lumberjocks send me a personal message through the forum with your email address, or contact me through my web site email address, and I will send you the files.
