I work in an office, and have really been craving hands-on, practical work. I miss the mental challenges too - working out a design and then creating something physical and long lasting.

So this winter I began woodworking. I started a bit before, but now I am committed. My only space is a corner of the living room (I live in an apartment) to set up a Workmate and begin some small projects to see how much I enjoy woodworking.

I usually get way way ahead of myself, so this time, I am limiting myself a bit to learn the basics before investing too heavily in tools.

Welcome to LJ’s…

My first woodworking project was undertaken on the balcony of a one bedroom flat on the first floor of a block of appartments, way back in 1972… when neighbors didn’t have the propensity to complain due to their inexperience with hi-fi, loud TVs ads and litigation was a newly discovered word yet to be entered into the urban dictionary.

If you don’t have the luxury of outside space (balcony, back yard or open driveway), may I recommend your first investment be a bloody good shop-vac and plenty of plastic sheeting…

Amongst splinters, the biggest byproduct of woodworking is sawdust… a shitload of sawdust… If you don’t keep it in abeyance, you’ll be primarily munching on sawdust sandwiches, roasts and smoothies till it becomes your staple diet…

-- If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Have your say...
