I have a 16×24 basement workshop (384 sf, a little over 1/4 of the basement). I now work almost exclusively with hand tools. I find that much more rewarding, since as a hobbyist, most of my projects are single items, not production runs.
The photos show my recently-completed tool wall. You can read more about that at http://www.closegrain.com/2011/02/workshop-reorganization.html.
Part 4 of this series includes a short video tour.

Steve, this is one of the best organized shops that I have had the pleasure to see. I have always had a great deal of admiration for those woodworkers willing to put the time and effort into developing their hand skills. I am glad that you posted these pictures of your shop. It was enjoyable to take a tour of it.

Steve, you have entirely too many hand planes and chisels. I can send you my address to send them to if you need help storing them… :-)
Okay seriously though, I really like your collection. That plane till is really nice.

Hi Steve – That is some great tool storage! It looks like everything is handy to your bench and will enhance your productivity. I agree with you about horizontal surfaces – nature abors a vacuum so stuff just tends to accumulate there. I must kick into high gear and get organized like you. Nice work!

Been following the shop renovation since you started it. The final results are great. One of these days, I’ll get a roundtuit.

Welcome Steve. If I had all those hand tools that is all I would work with too, very impressive.

Truly inspiring, nice layout! I should be such a good planner with tool storage. Thanks for posting!
