« Part 2: More insulating Part 3 of Shop Improvments series Part 4: More organization »

My big toolbox or tool chest…whatever you call them…right inside the shop door kept getting the top compartment full of crap. Everything just seemed to gravitate to it so today I set out to solve that problem.

This isn’t going to be a very lengthy write up because I didn’t take that many pics as I was building this thing. I didn’t really have a plan when I started other than it needed to hold my dual charger, 4 cordless drills/drivers, my odds and ends cases of bits, and the whole thing had to be one unit that I could remove if i wanted to.

Here is the final solution I came up with. The lights are completely unnecessary but everything looks cooler with overhead lights.

I even managed to incorporate some cord management for the dual charger as well as my cell phone. Here is a close up of that part

The hole for the cell phone cable doubles as a finger hole to access the little cord compartment underneath.

And if you’re wondering why I have 2 drills and 2 impacts its because I bought one set and got the other as a gift. I was going to return the second set but made the mistake of using them on a project that used pocket holes as well as normal screws. Never having to change a bit was so awesome I kept them all.

And lets face it bits, pencils, and tapes all seem to disappear off to some random corner of the shop and have a party. This way I’m not setting bits down for them to go off and party.

Thank you for posting this. The top of my box is a nightmare. I’ll be incorporating some of your ideas into mine.

Wonder, yes I am, perplexed, never…. Start using 2 gauges of screws at the same time and you’ll be rushing out to buy 2 more drivers… never having to change a bit is more than awesome, it… ah screw it… hits the nail on the head.
