Imagine you just got off the airplane and are about to take a shuttle to you hotel to set out on an adventure of discovery for one whole week. That's what I was doing on February 16, 2013. After arriving at my hotel in San Diego California I checked in and did a little sightseeing by walking to Balboa and visiting the Marston House Museum & Gardens which was very interesting but my main purpose for the visit was to see their collection of early 1900s Arts & Crafts furniture and the architecture of the home that Marston had built. After that I toured the gardens and made my way back to the hotel followed by a walk around down town and diner then settled in for the night.
Sunday was great I was able to Meet Richard Rustynails and hear about his week at ASFM and get to know each other. I knew then that this was going to be a great week. Bright and early Monday I met up with Paul Shipwright Mathew Nedeljko breakfast before heading out to our first day of class.
It was a fast five straight days of fun combined with learning and hands on work. Patrick and his crew were eager to teach and we were eager to learn the different styles of doing marquetry. I was in Phase I
with Sally "zombolina". Paul and Mat were in phase II and it was a real treat to work alongside them and see what they were learning as well and to see what is capable from two very talented people. I can't wait to go to Phase II but I will have to get a bunch of practice in before I am up to the task. I am finishing off the week by going to diner with my nephew who now lives in San Diego then back to Virginia to finish my shop and get to riding my chevalet.
All and all it was a great week spent with some great guys and gals.

Bob, It was nice meeting up with you and getting to know you as well. I found the class to be equally informative and fun. I hope the test scores I gave you helped out for the final test. Did you get a 100%? :)

I missed out on the Marston House Museum & Gardens. I wish I would have known about it as I would have liked to see their collection of peired furniture and architecture.

I purchased the plans from ASFM to build a Chevalet so I to will be able to practice what I learned at the class as well once I get it completed. I am hoping to get the wood within a few weeks as I am excited to get it built and start working on what I had learned.

Your class projects look great. What are you planning for your first project / marquetry design to be?

Richard

Hi Bob. The week went by very quickly for me too. It was great to see Mat again and to meet you and Sally. Too bad that I missed Richard but that's life. I recommend the experience to anyone who is interested in learning marquetry. Patrick and Patrice are the best.
I look forward to seeing your pieces as you get that chevy revved up.

Bob, it was great spending the week with you in San Diego, and I know that you have a bright future of Marquetry projects ahead of you! I'm sure that we will stay in touch, and I'm looking forward to the community of ASFM alumni continuing to expand and revive this lost art.

Richard…too bad that we didn't get a chance to meet in person, but based on the pictures from Week 1 it looks like you had a very successful class too. Good luck building your chevy and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask!
