I want to thank my wife for finding these two wood planes at an estate sale on Sat 4/1/2011 I am not sure if they are able to be salvaged. I am looking into the cost of some new irons, one new knob and one new handle. I guess the first thing to do is clean them up and get all the rust taken off then polish them. I think they are #3's but I am not sure one is a bit wider than the other. I just picked up a Wood River plane so I am not sure what I would do with 3 - #3's. One of the irons must have been from another plane as it is about 3/16" narrowed then the opening maybe a little more.
This one is one I pulled out of my dads tool box about 30 years ago and as you can see its in bad shape. Originaly it belonged to my grand dad.

you swap money for the knowledge and elbowgrease when it comes to either buy new or
geting old planes restored so for the two first take a surch on L J there is some very good
restored projects and gooood blogs about it one of the latest serie is Dan´s
superdav has one with his woodenplanes
and Kent Shephard has one where he used Formby´s
and that coffinshaped smoother doesn´t look so bad from what I can see
the pictures is alittle blured and missing light but that is a minor thing
from what I can see its mostly the iron you have to deal with and derust

They both appear to have stamped lateral adjusters. I'd definitely do it for the experience which we have in great supply here. I've done many & will help in any way I can.

In my opinion, if you start replacing that round knob on the front, then you might as well just go buy new planes. I'd suggest just keeping the original knob… wear and all. Make a new rear handle, de-rust it, sharpen it, tune it, then use it.

I use Citric acid and the info can bee found in my blog about it
I tri´d cola many years ago and didn´t find it good but others has seems to get some result with it
some use evaporustremover and Brit just made a good rewiew on a gel rustremover from hammerite
so you see there is plenty to experiment with in the labritory …... LOL

Naval jelly is a good rust remover but getting these guys to work is not just about removing the rust. First things first get the rust off of the blade and see what kind of pitting you have on the back. If it can be honed out then I would grab replacement blades from IBC. (not a lot of sense restoring the plane if the edge can't be effectively sharpened)
After that. Here is the order of importance list of things to do:
Flatten the sole with adhesive backed sandpaper and a flat reference surface.
Seat the frog to the body using valve seating compound.
Set the blade to the frog by flattening the frog body using the same sandpaper method.
You'll learn a lot (including why good planes are not cheap)

I started by building an electronic rust remover I was out of clean buckets and my battery charger was not working so this project cost me about $85.00 seventy one of which went for the charger I have a lot of stuff I want to recondition and has a lot of rust so it will get a lot of use. I will be making a larger tank so I can fit the table of my band saw into it and I will keep this one for saw blades that have been laying around and never got sharpened, a set of carving (about 16) chisels that I had for 10 years and just let sit. Florida is bad for tools but now I have something to fight back with Electrolysis & T-9 Bowsheild & wax. Thanks to all the help here at LJ's so a big thanks to all. These are not the best planes to recondition because the frogs are just stamped metal and cast as part of the plane itself but it will be a good exercise for when I find a good one.
I will post some photos after I clean the plane irons up and get them to shine.

After getting these cleaned up I saved the parts I want to keep and will get rid of the main bodys because they habe no frog and someone just took parts and put them together to make it look like a good plane. My wife did not know the difference and at first glance I may not have picked up the fact they were pieced together as well so live and learn but I have some nice parts for the next one. LOL
