I have never attempted to do wood carving.

I have never attempted to do wood carving other than some chip carving but lately I have been fascinated by some of the work I have seen. I watched a guy in Savannah Georgia doing carving in front of a consignment arts shop and was captivated by his skill. My wife and I are looking for a motor home to travel the US and I was concerned I would not get to do any wood working which made me not want to do any traveling but now I think wood carving would be the ideal thing for me to do while on long trips. I have a set of about 25 - 30 carving chisels with all kinds of profiles that I took in trade and they have been sitting for about 8 years collecting dust. I am getting excited about this new skill I about to learn and would even like to take some classes to get up to speed faster learning the basics. Does anyone have any suggestions about books or techniques I can investigate?

He calls his collection "Sea Grass" and they sell got around $300.00 if I remember correctly.

yes sharping is the first thing to get to know, next any book by chris pye,you the get best deal on amazon books for this
depending of what type of carving that interests you. relief, fish, figures.
you'll also need to figure out a bench top to work on,depending on what type of carving you choose.

Thanks, I will look for the book. I will be starting with relief carving because I have a pattern for a blanket chest I am building for each grand daughter, 3 in all. I have a stone that is 1000/4000 grit is that good enough? I thought that this would be the best to start with.
