I am a custom finish carpenter with over 30 years experience. I am just now looking at woodshop projects. I even failed woodshop in highschool. I have built incredible things on jobsites but am truly interested (for the first time) in wood shop style projects. Hoping I catch on quick and am really enjoying many of the beautiful projects I have browsed through here

I just picked up a new lathe. As a rule, I only buy quality tools. With shop tools I am finding out you can spend and enormous amount of money on them. Since I am a true beginner at these things, I did not go all out with my first lathe. I went to harbor freight (yeah I know). I got a 14 X 40 benchtop. I also picked up a bunch of 4 X 4s from a job I did this week. I figured i could practice on nickel peices of wood instead of something much nicer. I have an incredible amount of pecan at my disposal so I have lots to do there. I also happened along a decent amount of bodark. I have not had a chance to size any of it yet but will do so as needed. hopefully there will be some wonderful surprises hidden in the piles. =) My one concern starting off is not so much inexperience. I have been a custom woodworker for over 30 years and still have all my fingers. But with shop tools there is a new set of rules. I am not wanting to lose my teeth or worse if a block of wood comes flying off the lathe. I have read several safety pages and believe I will do ok. I have about 80 ft of 4 X 4 to play with this weekend so wish me luck. ;)
