Part 1: Tongue Drum Journey No 1

06-04-2021 07:43 AM by robscastle | 6 comments »

I saw GnarlyErik’s tongue Drum post and watched the video, it was enough to get me excited, ...about making one for my grandson too! https://www.lumberjocks.com/projects/420028 I did quite a bit of research and watched a few you tube posts and found some plans from The Carmichael Workshop Checked out a few more of Gnarly’s creations and decided to set to work. I could have edge jointed a few of my “planks” I had just made or looked for a simpler way ...

Part 3: Tongue Drum Journey No 3 ( but actually post 2a dummy spit)

06-05-2021 10:26 AM by robscastle | 3 comments »

OK after a coffee and a walk away from the impending project. I determined I had screwed up badly, for the following reasons:-1. I should have done a test cut after setting the 20 mm rip setting.2. I should have not been so confident and set 21 mm3. Then used the last No 6 undersized board for feet, trims etc. Oh well these things happen How did i fix it.As there was a max of 0.5 mm run out on both sides I was reluctant to try and joint them or thickness the again and lose precious...

06-22-2021 07:18 AM by robscastle | 11 comments »

OK I paid the Dollar shop a visit as instructed by GnarlyErik Really cut lose and spent $4 AUD. cut up some 8 mm dowel Set up the forstner bit in the drill and made a ball holder jig. Drilled them out ready to fit the handles. I used some roof and gutter silicone sealant All went well so I left the to dry overnight Next morning this is what I found. Not sure what happened so I thought I best stop and seek help. A couple of Crowies re...

Part 5: Tongue drum mallets Take 2

06-23-2021 04:06 AM by robscastle | 4 comments »

Well I went to progress my dongers and guess what I found? more of my big budget super balls split. So first off it was back to the shop for more top shelf super balls I then decided to do some scientific autopsy work to try and determine why they split. The sticks were 8mm or there a bouts the forstner bit was 10mm The only possible cause was I had used the incorrect size forstner bit initially, I am not really sure but the holes I drilled def looked smaller once I remov...

Part 6: Getting the Mallets finished and the Frame prepared

06-27-2021 05:47 AM by robscastle | 8 comments »

OK been a bit slack lately too cold, Too wet, Too old,.... all that sort of rubbish excuses. The Mallets:- I purchased more Super Balls and re did them.No splitting this time I am of the belief it was operator error as when I packed up the25 mm and 10 mm forstner bits I found there was a 6mm one out too. There is no sign of splitting so its an uppercut to myself there! The frame:- I had this crazy Idea of making the frame all book matched joints but as I didnR...

Part 7: getting the boxes ready and tongue work

06-28-2021 04:57 AM by robscastle | 6 comments »

I am not sure if you noticed I had cut one of the boxes incorrectly and had the Buried Treasure holes showing. So i whacked in big time this morning and got quire a bit done. Out with the plug cutter first up and fix the goof I used 10 mm and 13 mm plugs to fix it up Left it for the glue to dry. Made the acoustic baffles for the ends. Cut up all the timber for the tongues, then started on gluing up my tongueNo 1, I have only got one frame clamp...

Part 8: Finishing the boxes hark a tune!

06-28-2021 04:58 AM by robscastle | 3 comments »

I kept keeping on and this morning, and I got to a stage where my concerns as to function were beginning to grow So I clamped everything together no base as did a test. I didn’t hear much more than a dull thud when I wacked it, so i tried all the different wackas, nothing more than different colour dull thuds A little perplexed I expected a sound something like Sandy Nelson produced, a little disappointing to say the least. I then wondered if it was because the base...

Part 9: Beep beep I am on the home run

06-30-2021 12:25 AM by robscastle | 4 comments »

This morning I took the clamps off. Had a play around with the spoiled slabs, may be I could cut the center out and make a Cameo photo holder, who knows, but I will keep them for a while anyway. The third one or the one in the middle broke in half so its relegated to plugs and patches. The other three are reasonable, sorry about the wet patch it rained again! Anyway the drum. I sanded the top flush with the box frame and used a round over bit to well you guesse...

Part 11: Tongue Drum No 3 Start

07-11-2021 08:32 AM by robscastle | 4 comments »

Well its not exactly the start, as you have already seen the acoustic Boxes already. I went a little off the template with this, so I am not sure if it will even work, however a guy has got to do what a guys got to do. 1. I have decided to go sideways!... as there is a general trend to venture into the unknown as other LJs, were testing the duck pond I thought I may as well conform.2. You have got to hand it to me for at least trying, (see below) if it doesn’t work I can simpl...
