OK after attaching the onlays it was time for some repair fixes profiling and sanding followed by more sanding
The Base
It had a split that needed fixing so I watered down some glue and clamped it up.
the put it aside to set.
The sides
the four sides had onlays of tools I traced and cut out with the band jig saw then radiused on my disc sander.
The were then glued onto respective sides and left to set.
Bolt/nail cutters Glue bottle adjustable spanner and a ring open ended were the models.
Polishing
Once the glue was set and residue removed with a scraper it was time to get this timber to show its real features.

Onlays (never heard of that term but it makes good sense) are great!
Excellent blog.
Thanks

Jon,
You may have never heard of the term before but I can assure you, you have seen them everywhere, and they don’t necessarily need to be wood.
Look up at your ceiling (plaster) or on your doors (could be composite) even check in the mirror! if you have unfortunately had to go to the dentist, inlays and onlays are there too!(gold!) (and whatever) they could also be called moldings, embellishments or trim, lipstick nail polish jewellery, ..or in my case just tart up stuff!.
Its all just laid on to make something (or body) more attractive!!
But at the end of the day its just a simple box.
Any way that’s enough or I will have LBD wanting more pictures!

I’ve onlayed a few kilos… ok, a tad more than a few… and some misguided wretches may question it’s attractiveness...
I can supply the pictures…
