Broken Screw Extractor - Unscrew-Ums

Broken Screw Extractor - Unscrew-Ums

I heard about this life saving tool on an old (2014) Fine Woodworking podcast. Fortunately for me, T & L Tools is still in business. If you have ever broken a small delicate brass screw while installing a hinge you will appreciate this tool. It will remove broken screws with minimal removal of wood. So far I’ve been able to just put in a new screw. The only caveat is that while the unscrew-ums are hardened steel, they do not last forever and this is explicitly covered on th...

DeWalt DWA3HLDFT IMPACT READY 12-in Magnetic Impact Bit Holder

DeWalt DWA3HLDFT IMPACT READY 12-in Magnetic Impact Bit Holder

In the world of tools and accessories, bit holders are kind of ho-hum. They come with every kit we buy and most of us, including me, rarely think much about them. However… Do you ever get annoyed when the bit sticks in the head of the fastener you’re screwing in and pulls loose from the holder? Mostly with Robertson (square) drive and Torx, it’s common for the bit to get torqued into the head of the fastener and when you pull the driver back, the bit stays with the fas...

Flexible Cordless Drill System

Flexible Cordless Drill System

12-30-2019 11:38 PM by Rich | 24 comments »

This review is for the Bosch GSR12V-140FC Cordless Electric Screwdriver. It consists of a main driver unit and four attachments. There is a standard hex driver head, a right-angle head, a drill chuck head and an offset attachment with a hex driver mount. The right-angle attachment can accommodate any of the other three heads. I had had my eye on a similar unit from Milwaukee, but with a $229 price tag, I was waiting for a deal to come along. Earlier in December, Amazon had a $20 off de...

Do you use and break small drill bits?

Do you use and break small drill bits?

Boys and Girls, This may not be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s why I’ve refrained from giving it 5 stars. If you don’t use small drill bits (1mm bit mounted in mini-chuck) then it won’t concern you and if you reach the end of this article, you’d have wasted some of your valuable time and maybe even some of mine… but if you do indulge… the chances of a bent or broken .5mm to 4mm drill bit will be greatly reduced… may even work for the equivalent imperial bits. If y...

Drill Press Table

Drill Press Table

08-24-2018 06:38 AM by HankLP | 4 comments »

Spent a lot of time scratching my head about drill press tables. Looked online and considered building a new one. My previous build was small and notched out for the raising/lowering crank handle. The Peach Tree table was delivered last week and I’m very pleased with it. It is very sturdy, built with 1 3/8” thick laminated MDF and heavy duty T-Track using 3/8” bolts. The 2” x 3” aluminum fence is dead flat and square with the table, though the 3” leg t...

Colt Twin Land brad point wood bits

Colt Twin Land brad point wood bits

05-13-2018 08:15 PM by ocean | 16 comments »

My older set of brad point drills were getting dull and after drilling into a small brad buried in a rocking chair, it was time to get some new bits. I went looking for some new bits and found two sets at Infinity Tools. At $20 dollars the price was right. These bits by Colt are hard to believe. They are twin land bits and cut a very clean hole both in, thru and out the other side with ease. No splintering in or out and because of the twin land they clear the hole as you drill by funneling th...

Generic Batteries for Dewalt DCD771 Cordless drill

Generic Batteries for Dewalt DCD771 Cordless drill

04-18-2018 07:43 PM by Blackie_ | 19 comments »

I found a set of Generic batteries that fit the Dewalt DCD771 cordless drill on Amazon. I purchased a couple of them and thus far that are worth their weight in gold. These batteries are larger (4.0ah) than the stock batteries (1.3ah) that come with the kit and work in the same charger that came with the drill kit. They are a bit larger in that they are taller and a tad bit heavier. Masione 20V 4.0Ah Max Lithium Ion Replacement Battery for Dewalt Hammer Drill DCB204 DCB207

Great Jig for a Reasonable Price

Great Jig for a Reasonable Price

12-30-2017 03:00 AM by scarpenter002 | 4 comments »

As I was starting my Home Office project, I decided to use the European styled hinges, rather than the more common hinges I typically use. I have not had much luck with these hinges, so based on research decided to purchase some jigs to make my installations more repeatable. I reviewed many different jigs, and through the shopping process, ran into the Kreg. I have always been happy with Kreg products in the past, and with a MSRP of only $29.99 USD, it did not seem like too much of a gambl...

Irwin Max Speed Speed Bore bit

Irwin Max Speed Speed Bore bit

01-31-2017 03:33 AM by Mainiac Matt | 13 comments »

I borrowed one of these from a carpenter in our crate shop at work and was really impressed with how fast and clean it cut. So when I saw them at Ace Hardware I picked up a 3/4” one. Tonight I broke it out to drill some add’l holes in my bench. I like it a lot. It ate up the hard Maple like it was pine. Pros:1. Pilot grabs hold and pulls the bit right through the wood.2. The three cutting edges really cut fast. They are very sharp.3. Both the entry and the exit holes...

My Kingdom for a Set of Antique Center Bits

My Kingdom for a Set of Antique Center Bits

01-13-2017 08:48 PM by Ron Aylor | 11 comments »

As you may or may not know, I recently completed a hand crank drill press inspired by a drawing of one reportedly depicted in Siever’s ‘Il Pianoforte…” 1868.         I thought it only fitting to have a set of antique center bits to accompany my new/old drill press. Well, we all know these are had to come by. So, my next best option was to find something to emulate those wonderful old bits, and spade bits seemed like a logical solution. Most of the spade bits I examined though had rather s...
