Fine finish Rasp alternative

Fine finish Rasp alternative

I bought these files after a little searching for more shapes and sizes of the Nicholson Plasti-Cut file that I had come across (top right file w/red handle). The Nicholson has been a go to for awhile in the shop and I found these Japanese files @Lee Valley so I thought I would order 1 of each cut grade and order more as I needed. The files all work great and are worth the price especially compared to hand cut modeler rasp. They all leave a glass finish but can be aggressive also. ...

Self Cleaning Blast Gates

Self Cleaning Blast Gates

02-16-2010 10:00 PM by longgone | 8 comments »

I have tried numerous blast gates, metal and plastic. These from Lee Valley are the best I have found and they never clog because of the way the gate pushes any possible clog out when the gate is open and closed. I have been using them for 2 years without a clog. They do not come with the knobs…I added them for ease of use. when remodeling my kitchen last september I saved all the knobs from my old cabinets with the intention of re-using them on the new cabinets. I was outvoted by my w...

1/4" drill bit extenders that work

1/4" drill bit extenders that work

05-09-2010 05:21 AM by Bob #2 | 8 comments »

Over the years I’ve probably purchased a half dozen different quarter-inch bit extensions all of which have failed for one reason or another. Either thay were too long or too short or too wobbly or just plain junk and end up frustrating me every time I attempted to use them. This morning I went out to check a couple of vendors that supply these devices to see if there were any improvements. The first store I checked had a set five but they were sealed in plastic and the sales clerk ...

Lee Valley Bench Plane Blade and Chip Breaker Set - Stanley/Record

Well, Lee Valley has done it again….. After trying for years to get my #4 Smoother working as well as it should, (Always getting close but not quite there) I finally gave up and ordered this Plane Blade and Chip Breaker Set to replace an original cutter and chip breaker in my Stanley #4 smoother. I have previously purchased a Hock replacement blade for my #5 and liked it but they are a little spendy so I set out to see what was available, The Pinnacle blades looked good but seem a l...

10-1/2 oz Warrington Pattern Hammer from Lee Valley—————————————————————————- My hammer collection has historically been limited to 20oz claw hammer and a couple of ball peens. My wife bought the claw hammer for my birthday early on in our marriage. The message was clear, “build me a house or break your thumbs trying”. Well, th...

The Little Victor Plane from Lee Valley

The Little Victor Plane from Lee Valley

I bought this little plane mostly on a whim. I am simply amazed by how useful it has turned out to be. It is easy to use either one or two handed. It has Lee Valley quality throughout. The iron was very sharp when I got it. It has a cast iron body that just feels right. I believe the current price is about $35.00.

Lee Valley Brad Point Bits - Set of Seven

Lee Valley Brad Point Bits - Set of Seven

11-02-2008 07:03 PM by ChicoWoodnut | 7 comments »

I was in need of some brad point bits to drill holes for a set of ball catches I am installing. I have been using regular twist bits and needed something with a centering guide. My set of Irwin Jennings-pattern auger bits don’t go to 1/4”. I looked at brad point bits at the Borg and didn’t like any of the ones I saw. The lip was simply a point ground into the edge of the radial cutter. It didn’t look like it would leave a clean hole on entry and that is what I am ...

A Quality Square

A Quality Square

06-09-2011 09:57 PM by brtech | 7 comments »

I’ve been trying to score a Starrett 4” double square on Ebay for a couple of months. I use a snipe service and have bid around $35 on any reasonable item, adjusting based on shipping charges and condition. Lost out on at least a dozen. The going rate is $45+. I scored a 12” combo square with the protractor head and the regular head for $39, but couldn’t get a plain double square. This one is $36.50 new. It’s a bit much, but not bad. It’s very nice...

Specialized plane that has a lot of uses

Specialized plane that has a lot of uses

I got a great deal on the set of these on ebay, but after using them on my new countertop and router table to trim edge banding I would definately pay full price in a heartbeat. These use the same thick iron and easy adjustment as all the other bevel up planes in the Veritas line. I followed the set up instructions included and was making shavings in just a few moments. After using the set screws to dial in the fit, I pulled out the iron and honed it up to 8000. The back of the iron was a...
