We ordered this saw from Rockler for $999 with free shipping from Jet. took about 2 1/2 weeks to get, but hey it was during an epidemic. It comes in one box on a pallet and has a massive amount of styrofoam. We were able to lift the bottom up on a piece of styrofoam and add the base and feet then stand it up and walk it into position. The table(and fence) and one dust port were the only things to add. There was a small 4 inch piece of wood in the bag with the dust port… DO not throw ...

Just Got a New Career!

Just Got a New Career!

I’ve been using a shop built drum sander for five or six years, for building custom Tele style guitars. Worked great, but my wife bought me an anniversary present a couple of weeks ago, so I made the mistake of throwing the old warhorse onto Craigslist. BIG MISTAKE. Spent two hours trying to get the conveyor belt to track. Impossible – Ordered another belt to replace the shredded original belt. (Yes, I installed the plastic “guides”, per the manual.) Forced to make con...

Jet - 6" Jointer with Helical Head Kit, Model JJ-6HHDX

Jet - 6" Jointer with Helical Head Kit, Model JJ-6HHDX

Again,There are numerous reviews of the highly-rated Jet 6” Jointer with carbon steel knives. The machine that I’m reviewing simply has the helical head. This sums it up well: GREAT UPGRADE!It is well worth the extra $2-300 investment for the helical head. I have run boards against the grain on purpose just to see what happens, and there is certainly some minor tear out on some boards, but nothing like you’d expect to see on a 3-knife HSS cutterhead machine. The heli...

The Decision and Initial Setup

The Decision and Initial Setup

This probably should be a blog post, but it is also a review in some way because I will explain why I chose this saw over a few others that were on the market. Often times I look for reviews, but I also wanted to share why I chose it as it does relate to how I value my purchase. This a a new saw so I want to give it its due. I currently own a JET 14 bandsaw that I purchased on CL about 5 years ago . It taught me alot as my first bandsaw, but was time for an upgrade mainly due to dust collect...

Jet 6" joiner

Jet 6" joiner

I purchased this joiner new in 2016 and like the 8’ version it came in two boxes. Although I did not have to mess with the motor or electric as you explained. Two people are needed to properly and safely assemble the unit. Take your time as there are many steps. Once completed the unit works flawlessly. It has a 4” dust port and soft wood produce bigger chips than hard woods. I am a Jet guy and have several pieces off this brand in my shop. Safety is always necessary in bo...

Jet 8" Jointer, unboxing, assembly, set-up, & initial use

Last Spring I sold my General 6” Jointer and my Williams & Hussey molder/planer with the intention of buying the Rikon 12” Jointer/Planer Combo. Then, looking at a heavy summer travel schedule I decided to put the purchase off till the Fall. When I finally went to execute the purchase, in early Oct., I discovered that the $2700 price had leapt to $3600 with the addition of $900 in tariffs. The Jet had gone to $4200. I balked and spent a month or so hand planing poplar for ...

One irritating flaw

One irritating flaw

Jet appears to have just released a version that may or may not replace the saw reviewed here. Decided to place this on LJ anyhow…the new saw may gave the same flaw. JWBS-14DXPRO 14” Deluxe Band Saw Purchased this from Rockler, about a year ago. As usual ordering a drop shipment is a frustrating roller coaster. However, the package arrived in reasonable condition. Assembly was fairly straight forward. The only comment about the construction is the assembly manual is...

Jet 16/32 review

Jet 16/32 review

03-13-2018 11:00 PM by eflanders | 6 comments »

It’s a rarity that I buy any machinery brand new but alas I have done so in buying a Jet 16/32 sander as a birthday present from my 84 year old mother. I’ve been very guilty at looking at reviews, but never writing them so here goes: I bought the unit from an online dealer (who I think errored in their ad) but allowed me free freight, plus a 10% off coupon on their sale price. So the bottom line price was awesome! The unit was in-stock and thus it was shipped the next day. ...

Jet 10/20 plus drum sander, save your money!

When I purchased and first used this tool, it was a love affair. I first used it to produce a supply of 1/8” red oak sheets that I used to reface our existing kitchen cabinets. After that was complete I used it for a variety of small projects. (I run a home shop, not a commercial shop, so the projects were varied.) After less than 50 t0 100 hours of use, disaster. The lead threads/lead screw design failed. The lead threads in the the soft aluminum sanding drum cover casting stripp...

Jet 1640 EVS - First Impressions

Jet 1640 EVS - First Impressions

When I started turning I bought a Rikon 70-220vsr midi lathe. Its a great lathe and served my needs quite well until I decided I wanted to go bigger. Two months ago I found a Jet 1642 for sale a few hours away and later that afternoon it followed me home. What a great lathe, but it lacked one feature that I was hoping to have in a new lathe. Because of some challenges that I have with my feet and back I find it difficult at times to stand at the lathe or to bend over the bed when hollowing. F...
