I’m sure Someone does.
Someone should be around by morning.
If Someone doesn’t show up,
than I guess Anyone could guess at it.
A picture of the face will help Anyone guess,
otherwise we’ll have to wait for Someone, who has experience.

No, it’s Ebony. That’s my new standard answer for these impossible to identify woods.

An endgrain photo would be helpful …

Or even face grain. Showing two different pictures of the same part of the board isn’t really that helpful.

If it helps it’s an antique Snooker Cue Rack. The only end grain showing is curved and finished. That’s part of the reason I’m having trouble

Sorry about the glare. Best pictures out of about 30 of the endgrain.

Looks like mahogany to me also. I’m leaning towards a non-African variety due to the smoothness of the brain color.

I vote mahogany too. South/Central American, most likely, for the reasons mentioned above.

Actually, I amend my vote. Seeing the other pictures it reminds me of wood I scavenged from China built furniture. I never did identify it but it had grain and weight similar to spanish cedar but was blonde like ash, and come to find out it wasn’t very strong. As found it was stained to look like mahogany.

Alder. 100%. I can tell by the end grain in this picture.

I change my mind. It’s alder with poo on the end grain.

Being it is a snooker cue rack leads me to think of some type of Mahogany, but those bumps on the end grain leads me to believe it has a disease of unknown origin…..... Jerry (in Tucson)
