I keep a squirt bottle by my sharpening station and squirt the stone occasionally to keep the stone clean as i work.

You might also try not rolling the honing guide quite so far so the tool rides through the slurry but not the guide roller. (You can turn the stone around occasionally to keep the wear even)

I hollow grind all my blades so there is very little honing required, slow down and as mentioned squirt often, I use a old dish washing soap container to flush slurry of the stone. Haven’t used my Veritas guide in ages, do everything freehand.
