Where can I find 0.30" steel rod?

It’s not a big deal to turn a rod down from
the next larger size on a metal lathe.

How long a .300” rod do you need?

At least a few inches, maybe 6 or 8” would be ideal. This lathe might not be long enough to make it, though I could try using a friend’s bigger metal lathe.

I guess I could also try it on the wood lathe, but freehanding it is difficult to get any kind of consistency.

Wow, that’s pretty close. Thanks for the link, might be just the ticket. Maybe a slight bit of sanding or a quick pass on a metal lathe will bring it down.

Chuck that up in a lathe or drill press and put some 220 sandpaper to it. Just keep even wear along the length and you’ll shave .002 pretty quick. Probably get more precise than trying to take that little off with a turning too. Only removing .002 diamteric would usually be grinding or burnishing operation.

I doubt sandpaper will be able to remove any metal from drill rod unless the rod is first annealed.

Usually drill rod comes in the annealed state. I’ll order some today and give it a try.

Yeah, I looked that’s W1 steel. You’ll probably want to harden the working section but it’s sold in annealed state.

As an alternative, “here is 8 lengths of 7.6mm HSS drill rod which is .2992 in. It’s from China but I’ve ordered from them a few times and it’s always quality steel.

Any idea where I can find a 0.300” diameter steel rod? I m helping my father restore a watchmaker s lathe, and want to make a custom dead center for the mini tailstock. But finding exactly 0.300” is proving difficult… I can get 19/64 which is 0.297”, but the few thou offset from center might be a lot on the small scale of this machine.

If you can’t find it, check the yellow pages for a “centerless grinding company. I’m sure you want a really good finish on this rod? Maybe not. They may be kind and run a short section between jobs that are similar… Otherwise HokieKen has a great idea with the 7.6mm drill rod.
