I hate to ask this but was the motor wired properly (110 vs 220 volt) for the circuit you are using? Did you change the plug? If you do not know or are uncomfortable with electrical stuff, take the motor into a repair shop. Assuming you are somewhat familiar with electrical motors, the proper voltage wiring instructions are often printed on the motor or under the wiring connection cover. If it was wired for the correct voltage, then go online to research “start capacitor testing”. This is a common issue and it is an easy inexpensive fix.

Does the dust collector sound unusual? I had a similar issue with my Shopsmith dust collector. I can’t remember if I could visually see smoke, but could smell it when it was running.

I’ve done nothing to it. It’s wired properly from the factory. My boss used it only a couple of times he said he bought it 15 years ago and has not touched it since

So the unit runs fine but its just smoking? If that’s true, it could just be a buildup of dust and/or bug debris that’s arcing.

I was thinking that too so I put it back together after blowing out the motor turned it on started up fine shut it off look for any signs of smoking your arcing turned it on gave it a second shut it off again look for any signs of smoking and when I turned it on the third time the motor seized and does not spin
