I use a switchable magnet, like this one

Turn it on, pick up the shavings, take it to the trash can, turn it off and let the shavings fall.

As long as you don’t get too close to other metal pieces, like the motor or machine, it works great. Otherwise—shop vac with a brush.

I use one of these, though I’m dead sure I didn’t pay that much for it. Of course that doesn’t work for aluminum, brass, and such stuff. Those I get with a shop vac.
