Hi Steve – welcome to Lumberjocks. I think it has to do with controlling automated/spam kind of mis-use, but I’m sure someone more in the know will chime in.

There have been numerous spammers that have set up accounts and then proceeded to PM everyone, usually by using a bot. The post count makes it a little more difficult for that to be done, though it still happens.
