Is it possible to cut one of the 5 flaps off to gain access to the inside to do your thing and then glue it back in place? If not I guess the other thought is to clamp it in place and use some long nosed pliers from opposite sides to juggle the nuts around.

Lastly this thing could drive you completely “nuts” so just give it back to her and tell her it is what it is! Lol

Good luck

It seems that over time the matrix that supported the individual seedcases has broken down. This will make it, in my thoughts, to be a no go. Since it’s an antique I’m sure you wouldn’t want to open the bottom and somehow re-suspend the seedcases with stem.

Good luck.

Steve & Terry, thank you for your responses. If this should ever come up again, here is the solution:

LOML bought a bag of nuts in the shell that included several Brazil nuts. We tried all of them to find the narrowest ones, then I sanded off the high spots. The sanded areas are a lighter color, but that is virtually invisible since they are buried inside the pod. LOML fiddled with the ones inside the pod until she was able to create enough space to add the ones I sanded. Finally, she fiddled some more until she had angled the ones she had added so they wouldn’t easily fall out.

Our friend will be ecstatic when she sees the “restoration”.
