Photovoltaic cell power generation for home use only makes economic sense in areas like California, which has fantastically inflated power costs.

Yes, it makes sense to have solar in California. Electricity rates with PG&E start at $0.18 per kwh for everything up to the baseline amount. Anything up to 2X above the baseline is $0.24 and everything else is $0.40.

We have a somewhat large house and a family that likes to run the AC so we typically use about 3X the baseline amount in the summer. This averages out to around $0.27 per kwh. We added a solar system that knocks off most of the $0.24 and $0.40 usage. It should pay off in around 6-7 years and all electricity generated after that is free.
