Looks fine to me… as long as it’s flat, slap some wax on there and start making stuff.

If it was a mirror I’d take it back. Since it’s a jointer, I’d setup it up and flatten some wood with it!

It is difficult for me to tell whether the lighter spots are in the cast iron, but they appear to be on the surface and not in the cast iron. Since you used mineral spirits to clean the cast iron and the spots appear to lay on the surface, I wonder if you used the reduced odor mineral spirits and that left behind the spots (where the spots are additives put in home center sold mineral spirits). The other possibility is that the factory applied protective film was not completely removed.

If either is true and the spots are left-behind surface contaminates, then wiping the tables with an organic solvent free of additives like paint thinner, unadulterated mineral spirits, or even furniture paste wax devoid of silicones could remove the spots. I found that the product Sprayway 909 Orange Power Plus heavy duty degreaser in an aerosol spray can does a great job of removing cast iron protective films, leaving a contaminate-free surface. It is available from Grizzly and I would think it is another option for removing the spots.

Have your say...
