Howdy Rick – here in NE Ohio we have about 4” on the ground, but it has been in the single digits and blowing around 20-30 mph! This takes the wind chill down to -20 or so. Ouch, it hurts to be outside.
We are just South of the true Snow Belt/Lake Effect region, but with this NW wind, we get some lake effect snow and cold. Brutal Winter thus far.

Hang in there!

HNY!

Northeast Kansas! We have most of the foot we got on Christmas Eve through Dec. 27th, most of the 4 inches we got on Dec. 29th, and about 3 more inches last night-today. Now some melting and some compression, but it is pretty safe to say we have most of 10-11 inches total still sticking around. Expecting some mid wee snows to go along with an expected low of -10 on Friday.

Rick, in central Kentucky it is about 20 degrees F and there is no snow. And we have had no appreciable snow so far this winter. And I am not a bit sorry. Somehow the thrill of shoveling the driveways has worn off. If I don’t have to shovel any snow this season I will be happy.

Our first storm three weeks ago dumped 15.5”, and then we got about an inch of rain Christmas Eve, followed by sub-zero temps. I have frozen slush ruts in my driveway, and have to use 4-wheel drive to get in and out. The last few days it has been too cold to snow (overnight lows in the -15 to -20 degree range). Anybody that misses the thrill of shoveling driveways is welcome to come and take a whack at mine!

I keep asking myself ‘Why in Sam Hill did we move here from Tucson?’

Just a touch of snow.

That’s about 5’ of snow out the back door. Took me two days to get the patio cleared so I could open the door to let the dog out. Glad I didn’t have to hold it that long. lol I still can’t see out the window in my shop. That snow is about 2 feet above the top of the window.

Greetings guys:

Thanks for the “weather reports”.... lol. It sounds like we are all catching it pretty good all over the country. It started snowing here again a little bit ago. They said taper-off tonight, but i don’t think so. You guys up North are really buried up ass deep to a giraffe. That’s a little deeper than I want to be….lol. You all stay warm as you can, and hope those who can get in their shops are able to stay warm, also. Mine’s about 74, so I feel lucky to be able to go out to it. The lousy weather channel and local news don’t give you the big picture, so it’s nice to know and hear how everybody is faring. So, be warm, be safe, and don’t get out in this stuff if you don’t have to. It was an interesting trip across the country to hear from you all. Thanks.

Greetings guys and gals: Here’s a brief update to happenings here in the Ozark Mountains: We’ve got 4+ inches on the ground right now. Yesterdays low was 5 degrees, and of course, eveything is frozen. The high was around 20 all day, and last night it was only 10—whew… a warm-up…lol. More snow is expected tonight with another 3= inches coming, so they say. Lows at 4 degrees. Friday the high is only to get around 12, and a low of 0…. too darn cold for man or beast…. I feel for the poor animals that have to live in this crap. I’m glad I’m not a deer….. I’d rather be a rabbit….... buried up somewhere deeeeeepppp in a hole….... keep the reports coming, so we’ll know what’s happening…. forget the Weather Channel…. this is much better…..
Oh—I’ve got about a rick of dry wood stored in my sunroom to keep the homefires burning. Glad I got it put up before all this mess hit. I always plan ahead, though. You know what we always say—preparation first in wood, then go to the next step…..............

Sometimes I’m just happy to live on LA. forecast for next 10 days is mid 70’s, other times I wish I can see at least 1/2” of snow on my driveway :) One day I was freezing literally (about 2 weeks ago) there was a thin layer of ice on top of my roof. I think I will stick with my sunny LA days, I may even go to the beach today, relax and think of how lucky I am now :)

Rick, that was a good one (the bathing suits)

A day or two after Christmas we went to our in-laws that live close to big bear mountain (the closest place on LA to find a good amount of snow), we decided to drive up and try to find some snow so that the kids could play for a little while, but nothing, we were almost 5500 ft up and it was dry like summer time, there’s been other years that after the 3000 ft we are able to find lots of snow, needless to say the kids love it, but I think is not going to happen this year. I’ll be honest I will really like to live in a place with lots of snow like many of you guys, maybe one day.

We moved from Saginaw, MI to Tucson, AZ in the spring of 1983. The next winter, I asked my then-9 year old daughter if she missed the snow. She thought very carefully for a moment, then said: “No … if I want to see snow, you can take me up there” and pointed at the snow-capped peak of Mount Wrightson.

We still have the 9-12 inches that got piled up and kept everyone home at Christmas. Today we are getting blizzard conditions again with most things shut down or closing early. Northern Nebraska at its best Just love the 35 mile per hour winds but at least warm today at +10 F. got this email from a friend and think maybe Dane would enjoy if not all of you. Really long so apologize before I post.
DIARY OF A SNOW SHOVELER

December 8 – 6:00 PM
It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!
December 9
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I’ve ever had! Shovelled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplough came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life! December 12
The sun has melted all our lovely snow.. Such a disappointment! My neighbour tells me not to worry- we’ll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we’ll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I’ll never want to see snow again. I don’t think that’s possible. Bob is such a nice man, I’m glad he’s our neighbour.
December 14
Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shovelling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplough came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn’t realize I would have to do quite this much shovelling, but I’ll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn’t huff and puff so.
December 15
20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4×4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife’s car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that’s silly. We aren’t in Alaska , after all.
December 16
Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.
December 17
Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should’ve bought a wood stove, but won’t admit it to her. God I hate it when she’s right. I can’t believe I’m freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20
Electricity’s back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night. More shovelling! Took all day. The dam snowplough came by twice. Tried to find a neighbour kid to shovel, but they said they’re too busy playing hockey. I think they’re lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they’re out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they’re lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he’s lying.
December 22
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white crap fell today, and it’s so cold, it probably won’t melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plough on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he’s too busy. I think the butthole is lying.
December 23
Only 2 inches of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts?!! Why didn’t she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she’s lying.
December 24
6 inches – Snow packed so hard by snowplough, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plough, I’ll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shovelling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I’ve just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplough.
December 25
Merry fricking Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight – Snowed in. The idea of shovelling makes my blood boil. God, I hate the snow! Then the snowplough driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she’s a fricking idiot. If I have to watch “It’s A Wonderful Life” one more time, I’m going to stuff her into the microwave.
December 26
Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She’s really getting on my nerves.
December 27
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.
December 28
Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. My WIFE is driving me crazy!!!
December 29
10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That’s the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?
December 30
Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plough driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his BUTT. The wife went home to her mother. Nine more inches predicted.
December 31
I set fire to what’s left of the house. No more shovelling.
January 8
Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

It is hard to determine how much snow we have had here in North Dakota, because it usually snows side ways. I have about a 8 – 10 ft. pile of snow in my yard if anyone would like some. I had to dig through a 4 ft drift to get to my (not quite finished new workshop) and it usually fills in over night. I told my wife I need a covered walkway between it and the house. She rolled her eyes and said “whatever”. I’m thinking that is as good as an OK. We are under a weather advisory for blowing snow, so who knows how much we will get. The temp is a balmy 1 F with the wind chill at -19F. They are calling for -20F with wind chills at around -35 to -40 F for the next couple of days.

Alonso—I would be willing to trade places with you for a couple of years. You could enjoy this WONDERFUL winter weather , and I would suffer through the mid 70’s if I really had to.

Everyone stay warm or cool, whatever the case may be!

Woodnewbee, I feel your pain about the snow plow driver. For some reason, everytime I decide to plow my driveway, a snow plow comes a few hours later through my neighborhood and plows me in since all the plowed snow is basically ice. I broke two shovels clearing his plowed crap. Now I have a steel one but even that one seems to be going.
