I’d keep it, but then I’m a fan of the RAS. There are others (lots of ‘em) that dislike the RAS and wonder why it was ever invented. A lot of those folks had their opinions formed while using a Craftsman RAS, which (IMHO) killed the category with it’s lousy design. The Dewalt and the Rockwell/Delta RAS are well worth worth and (again IMHO) are much more versatile than any CMS or SCMS. In the end it just depends on your personal opinion of that style saw, but if you like them that’s a good one!

Fred is right on target. I have a Crapsman RAS which I still use and a Milwaukee miter saw but for some cuts this old Dewalt does it best.

@JoeinGa: Well, I’m not in Ga! I’m in northern NJ.

Are there additional features in good quality modern RAS that I should consider before deciding to refurbish this one? It sounds like it might be worth keeping.

KEEP IT!!! There are no modern affordable alternatives to what you have that wouldn’t represent a tremendous disappointment vs. what you could have with your current saw after a function restoration.

Well, since there’s like ZERO CHANCE of me getting it anyway, then yes I’d highly recommend keeping it and tuning it up. I’ve had several Craftsman Radial Arm Saws and couldn’t imagine being without one. And those old swing-arm models are pretty dang bullet proof when cared for.

LOL, Joe. You ever watch that show “American Pickers” where they go to old barns and try to buy stuff from some old codger? They dig down through 10 feet of junk to find an old rusted out spoke from some ancient bicycle. “Hey, is this for sale”? The old codger replies, “No, I’ve got plans for that spoke.” So as soon as someone shows an interest it becomes important again!

Thanks for the replies,

Codger Dan
