Looks like a saw that would have mated with a Craftsman miter box.

What Don said. The extra length is so that when it is in the mitre box, you have a decent amount of stroke left between the posts. My mitre box can saw a board 10” wide, and at that point my 26” saw has something like 6-8” of stroke length left, which feels pretty short.
