regular bench plane sharpened for end grain ?

If it is a metal plane with a common frog angle (45 degrees), all you need do is sharpen the blade extra well. There is nothing more to do. If fact, there is nothing more that you can do.

As it happens, a plane set up like this should have no difficulty planing end grain extremely well. It is only the high angle planes (50 degrees and above) that will struggle a little.
