Unless the lathe could be set up as a disc sander? You can set the table to sand whatever angle you need. Might look around in that box a bit, and find what looks like a mitre gauge, like on a tablesaw. There should be a disc that would mount on the headstock, sized to run in that curved area, so the sanding disc could be close to the table.

Yup, Bandit’s right. It’s a disc sander. I have an old Delta 930 that came with one. Mine has a 9” disc attached to a 3” faceplate. I haven’t used mine yet. When I do I’ll try sharpening a gouge or two to see how it does. I recently saw one being pimped on ePay for $250. Of course that was a buy it now price. Of course that may be a crazy price and it may only be worth chump change.

Well…. That’s interesting. If I can figure out how to set it up, I might be able to use it. I’ve got a couple of regular faceplates, but not the one you describe. I can’t imagine it would be real hard to put one together, though.

Thanks for your help. I never would have figured that out on my own.

Can you post a picture of the lathe? I’m wondering how it attaches.

Here’s a picture. Mine works with a 9” disc.
