lid stay for Caswell Runyon chest

Perhaps I do not understand the problem, but Rockler has what they call a soft close lid stay that they claim will protect those little fingers. It would seem that this stay could be mounted to the chest, perhaps requiring a simple interior modification if the lid has an inner flange that hugs the interior side walls of the chest.

For what it is worth, a wooden toy chest is a project I considered building a long time ago. However, I could never figure out how to protect little fingers, even with routing a relief sized to accommodate little fingers around the area where the lid contacts the sides and front. Plus I feared fingers pinched or smashed around the hinges. Since I am not a very trusting person, I placed little confidence that even quality soft close stays would always work. Even when they work, the heavy lid can still close and pinch those fingers. As a result it never got built. So what was my answer; an ugly Rubber Maid box.
