I don’t know about real close to St John, but there is Berland’s in Joliet, just off I-80—probably 40 minute drive. The other direction is Johnson’s Workbench in South Bend, IN—easily 90 minutes.

My brother and I are over in CP. Welcome to the area!

You can also go an hour to Woodridge for a Woodcraft. There is soon to be a Rockler near that in Bollingbrook. Both of these are just north of I55 off of 355. Easy drive but it’d about 40 or 50 miles. There is a other Rockler in Schaumburg which is about an hour and 15min. Lots of other stuff to do up there too so if you make a day trip out of it stop at rockler. 2 hours south in Indy there is a Rockler and woodcraft too.

The Von Tobel lumber on 30 and Cline has some selection of finishes different than the big boxes. I order my lumber through the Johnsons Workbench in South Bend.

Look me up here if you got any questons. Maybe we can have a wood workers local coffee meeting. Once in a while.

Thanks for the response and pardon me for not thanking you sooner. We had 3 very busy weeks in Saint John and I learned a lot about local resources and the particuliarities of construction in areas where there are basements and it freezes in winter. I’m in Southern California, close to Seal Beach. It hardly ever freezes here and basements are unheard of.

Went to Schilling and Von Tobel to look at tools, finishes, hardware as well as Big M, Big L, and Big HD. I do a lot of shopping at Big HD here at home, they have a pretty nice selection basic sheet goods and they are, well, right around the corner. When I went into the HD in Schererville I really felt at home except they didn’t have as nice a selection of cabinet grade plywood. For really nice wood and a larger selection of hardware I go to Austin Hardwoods in Santa Ana, California. I’ve heard them referred to as “the cabinet makers candy store” and, well, yes. Lots of far more exotic wood than I need. Lots of baltic birch and etc.

Wife and I are looking for a part-time home in SJ now. A place where I can have a small workshop. Have seen a couple of places with walk-out basements (didn’t know what that was before I saw one!) that would fit the bill perfectly if it were 1) closer to grandkids and 2) not quite so expensive. I was thinking that with a look-out basement I’d have to break down my sheet goods in the garage.

Anyway, would enjoy having coffee with you sometime. We figure on being back there in November for Thanksgiving dinner, possibly sooner if the real estate people come up with THE place we want to buy. Once we buy something back there we’ll probably do about 40% of our time there. Possibly more as I enjoy fly fishing and it looks like there is lots of locations to explore. Keep in touch, my personal email is: [email protected]

I live not far from St. John. I sometimes go up to the Woodcraft in Woodridge and nearby Rockler. Also, not too far from them is Owl Hardwood. Owl has a huge inventory of all kinds of wood both exotic and domestic. They also have great sheet goods

I’ll put Owl Hardwood in my “go see” list for when I’m back there again. Thanks.
