How about adding a ‘zoom to top of page’ button. Click the up arrow and it takes you back to the top of the page without scrolling. Either that or add a watch/unwatch button at the end of the posts. -- Karen - a little bit of stupid goes a long way |

Thanks for asking I would also like it if you could return to were left we off on a post if you follow a link. Many threads that have a lot of post there are buttons for the next 15 post so after viewing two or three of these extension buttons with 15 more post, if you follow a link and come back you have to start at the top of the thread and keep extending it until you get where you left off before going to the link. I also think it would be a good idea to have a flag button on the original post not just the comments. That way if there’s something way out there in the post (Like porn etc.)it could be reported quickly and with little effort. It would be great if we could send photos in PMs too. |

Ability to search for posts within a specific thread. Change the “time since last post” to show the actual time on the clock that the last post was made. Additionally, who the most recent poster was. This makes it much easier to scan threads from the main forum page. Add a button to send a PM directly from someone’s avatar, rather than having to go through their profile page. -- -Dan |

No matter what features you add to the website itself, it won’t mean a thing until you do something about the server the pages sit on. I routinely access LJ from 3 different physical sites with 3 different internet providers. LJ sucks at all 3 locations so I blame whoever is doing your web hosting. Problems include minutes (MINUTES! on a 20 Mbps line) delay in loading pages, scrambled posts using your posting tool and again, minute delays while posting before the posting tool closes. -- "Find out what you cannot do and then go do it!" |

My list, of which some have already been mentioned Another vote on following a blog series Finally, and you might not want me to go there, but there needs to be a revamp of the Top 3. I find it odd that simple shop jigs routinely beat out beautiful projects for honors simply because of the number of times favorited. I favorite things I might want to build (and good jigs/shop aids are useful to a lot of people) but would like to see a way to honor projects that are well done, but not favorited because I don’t have any interest in building it later, either from skill level or woodworking focus. -- https://www.jtplaneworks.com - In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. Fix the search Lumberjocks.com button. Scott, A small, free program called Infraview will do that for you before you post them. LJs comes up quickly for me. But, it takes an inordinate amount of time for the page to refresh after posting to some threads. I’m happy with the criteria for the Top 3 the way it is. But, maybe a Top3 +7 more? First, allow me to say that the LJ community is fantastic and I’m honored to be a part of it. Thanks to all for making this site possible. I have a suggestion that might add some value by helping subscribers in their searches for various project ideas. When we post projects we are able to add metadata in the form of check boxes that relate to the type of project – bench, chair, table, desk, etc, etc, etc…. I receive RSS feeds of all projects but, none are listed by project type and I have no way to sort projects so that I can prioritize my time. I’m not interested in most projects that aren’t furniture but, without the ability to sort, I can’t place those projects at the front of the rss feed. This might be a bridge too far and maybe a bit picky! I’d love to be able to choose which types of projects I want to see. Anyway, I think the site is great as is!!! Thanks again. -- Max the "night janitor" at www.hardwoodclocks.com |

Better navigation of forum comments. If there are, say, 4 new messages in a forum topic, I have to click the forum topic, then either click 4 New (which adds another page load, requiring two Back clicks to get to the index), or scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to see the new comments. The forum index page should allow you to click on, e.g., “4 New” and then take you directly to the new comments. -- ian | "You can't stop what's coming. It ain't all waiting on you. That's vanity." |

A map of LJ’s would be helpful locating others nearby – to split a load of lumber for sale, to get together and look at each other’s work, to do joint projects. Also, there needs to be some mechanism to encourage less experienced woodworkers (in which group I include myself). A mentoring mechanism would be nice. Those willing to mentor would add themselves and indicate how many they would be willing to mentor. Those looking for a mentor would then be able to look over the list of the willing and ask for help. Having accepted an invitation to mentor, the “mentor” would get a notice every time the “novice” posts a project or starts a new thread. That’s not very much, and maybe there could be more to it than that, but it should probably not be much – or nobody would volunteer! Of course, getting rid of pests or dropping unhelpful mentors is an awkward thing to work out. Oh, never mind. :) Perhaps the buddy thing covers it well enough. Both of these suggestions relate to building connections between people. -- I intended to be a woodworker, but turned into a tool and lumber collector. |
#44 posted 04-29-2014 10:08 PM |
I don’t understand the complaints about “block”. To avoid hurt feelings, maybe all that’s needed is to make “block” invisible. If one LJ block’s another, the blocker would simply not see the blocked person’s posts or threads initiated by the blocked person. There is no reason anybody has know. I’ve never blocked anybody on LJ nor have I noticed if anybody blocked anybody else, but I have been on more intense forums (fora?) where blocking was useful. -- I intended to be a woodworker, but turned into a tool and lumber collector. |

I feel like I need to ad my two cents about blocking,I feel blocking is a valuable tool. Many times I’ve seen two or more members get into flame wars on someones post who has nothing to do with the original person who started the thread. In cases like this when it’s my post I block all of the offenders and in the future I may or may not unblock them. Because I do this some folks scream that their freedom of speech is being violated by myself or Ljs but since LJs or myself does not represent the government their claim is unwarranted. I’ve also had an individual Pm me as many as 20 times a day with unwanted messages that the only way to stop was to block him and even then he started sending me PMs through homerefurbers, with out having blocking available this person might still be stocking me. |

I would like to be able to click on a post within my or others activity history and be directed to that post.
