How about adding a ‘zoom to top of page’ button. Click the up arrow and it takes you back to the top of the page without scrolling. Either that or add a watch/unwatch button at the end of the posts.

The ability to ‘watch’ a bog series. Notification would be sent when the next in a series were created. That would allow as series to be followed without it necessarily being authored by a buddy.

Thanks for asking
I would like to be able to organize favorites .

I would also like it if you could return to were left we off on a post if you follow a link. Many threads that have a lot of post there are buttons for the next 15 post so after viewing two or three of these extension buttons with 15 more post, if you follow a link and come back you have to start at the top of the thread and keep extending it until you get where you left off before going to the link.

I also think it would be a good idea to have a flag button on the original post not just the comments. That way if there’s something way out there in the post (Like porn etc.)it could be reported quickly and with little effort.

It would be great if we could send photos in PMs too.

Ability to search for posts within a specific thread.

Change the “time since last post” to show the actual time on the clock that the last post was made. Additionally, who the most recent poster was. This makes it much easier to scan threads from the main forum page.

Add a button to send a PM directly from someone’s avatar, rather than having to go through their profile page.

Here is my “wish list”
  1. Bring back the UI to search for projects by gag (I currently play around with the URL e.g. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/tag/coffee+table)
  2. Follow a blog series
  3. Youtube embedding
  4. Save drafts of blog entries and/or projects before publishing for the public
  5. Map view of Shops

No matter what features you add to the website itself, it won’t mean a thing until you do something about the server the pages sit on.

I routinely access LJ from 3 different physical sites with 3 different internet providers. LJ sucks at all 3 locations so I blame whoever is doing your web hosting. Problems include minutes (MINUTES! on a 20 Mbps line) delay in loading pages, scrambled posts using your posting tool and again, minute delays while posting before the posting tool closes.

  1. The formatting tags and quick pop-down reference are much than on most sites, but a WYSIWYG editor would be nice.
  2. Ability to directly upload videos.
  3. Ability to insert pictures from imgur (similar to the feature to add from photobucket)
  4. Ability to group favorites and filter by tag(s)

Karen, if you’re using your computer don’t forget that you can use the Home/End keys on your keyboard to skip to the top and bottom of the page. The links would be nice for mobile devices though.

My list, of which some have already been mentioned

Another vote on following a blog series
Another vote for organizing favorites
Easier to find reviews. You can search by tool or brand, but not narrow it down from there, which leaves too many to find reviews on a specific tool easily.

Finally, and you might not want me to go there, but there needs to be a revamp of the Top 3. I find it odd that simple shop jigs routinely beat out beautiful projects for honors simply because of the number of times favorited. I favorite things I might want to build (and good jigs/shop aids are useful to a lot of people) but would like to see a way to honor projects that are well done, but not favorited because I don’t have any interest in building it later, either from skill level or woodworking focus.

Fix the search Lumberjocks.com button.

Scott, A small, free program called Infraview will do that for you before you post them.

LJs comes up quickly for me. But, it takes an inordinate amount of time for the page to refresh after posting to some threads.

I’m happy with the criteria for the Top 3 the way it is. But, maybe a Top3 +7 more? Or a Top 3 by broad category?

A few thoughts on my end and another suggestion:
  • Search (I agree) – Fix used to give you a forum specific search, where you could separate the results by category/type (project, review, forum, blog). I have found it rather frustrating to not be able to refine my search by category/type
  • Mobile App (Maybe?) – Not to go into a wonderful(ly painful) debate about iOS vs, Android, an simplier (and faster) compromise might be to consider (at least) mobile-friendly version of the LJ website.
  • Watch – Clear all watches (checkbox style), or at least let us know what watches are for items that have exceeded the 30 day window.

First, allow me to say that the LJ community is fantastic and I’m honored to be a part of it. Thanks to all for making this site possible. I have a suggestion that might add some value by helping subscribers in their searches for various project ideas. When we post projects we are able to add metadata in the form of check boxes that relate to the type of project – bench, chair, table, desk, etc, etc, etc…. I receive RSS feeds of all projects but, none are listed by project type and I have no way to sort projects so that I can prioritize my time. I’m not interested in most projects that aren’t furniture but, without the ability to sort, I can’t place those projects at the front of the rss feed. This might be a bridge too far and maybe a bit picky! I’d love to be able to choose which types of projects I want to see. Anyway, I think the site is great as is!!! Thanks again.

Better navigation of forum comments. If there are, say, 4 new messages in a forum topic, I have to click the forum topic, then either click 4 New (which adds another page load, requiring two Back clicks to get to the index), or scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to see the new comments. The forum index page should allow you to click on, e.g., “4 New” and then take you directly to the new comments.

+1 on:

Follow a blog
Search within a thread/topic
Organize favorites
Redo the top 3
Like button so we can click that the project is good without typing a message. This may help top 3.

CL
please excuse my fervor on this subject but I totally disagree with a Like button ,I feel a like button will destroy the amount of real comments projects will get, anyone can click on a like button, what does that mean. To me it means someone is to lazy to comment or tell a person what they made or like about what they made. Sure some times all I say is “great job”but even that is better then “LIKE” in my opinion.

I’d like to get rid of the “off topic content. Click to see post” thing in the topics list. Just show the post like all the others.

Also, in the topic view it shows the title and the first bit of the first post. It’d be nice to instead see the most recent unread… on some, like the Stumpynubs thread, it’s drifted WAY beyond the topic of the first post.

A map of LJ’s would be helpful locating others nearby – to split a load of lumber for sale, to get together and look at each other’s work, to do joint projects.

Also, there needs to be some mechanism to encourage less experienced woodworkers (in which group I include myself). A mentoring mechanism would be nice. Those willing to mentor would add themselves and indicate how many they would be willing to mentor. Those looking for a mentor would then be able to look over the list of the willing and ask for help. Having accepted an invitation to mentor, the “mentor” would get a notice every time the “novice” posts a project or starts a new thread. That’s not very much, and maybe there could be more to it than that, but it should probably not be much – or nobody would volunteer! Of course, getting rid of pests or dropping unhelpful mentors is an awkward thing to work out. Oh, never mind. :) Perhaps the buddy thing covers it well enough.

Both of these suggestions relate to building connections between people.

I don’t understand the complaints about “block”. To avoid hurt feelings, maybe all that’s needed is to make “block” invisible. If one LJ block’s another, the blocker would simply not see the blocked person’s posts or threads initiated by the blocked person. There is no reason anybody has know. I’ve never blocked anybody on LJ nor have I noticed if anybody blocked anybody else, but I have been on more intense forums (fora?) where blocking was useful.

I feel like I need to ad my two cents about blocking,I feel blocking is a valuable tool. Many times I’ve seen two or more members get into flame wars on someones post who has nothing to do with the original person who started the thread. In cases like this when it’s my post I block all of the offenders and in the future I may or may not unblock them. Because I do this some folks scream that their freedom of speech is being violated by myself or Ljs but since LJs or myself does not represent the government their claim is unwarranted. I’ve also had an individual Pm me as many as 20 times a day with unwanted messages that the only way to stop was to block him and even then he started sending me PMs through homerefurbers, with out having blocking available this person might still be stocking me.

A1Jim,
I understand your position.
The fact is the Administration should be contacted and Administration needs to start taking care of these problems.

Blocking doesn’t do anything but piss the other person off, then they want to retaliate and the only place to do that is in someone else’s thread.
