Many websites of this size have a hierarchy of site admins plus at least one admin and at least one moderator for each subforum. The moderators are usually carefully selected forum regulars. Basically the moderators delete spam posts and watch for TOS violations which they pass along to the admin. Admins then have the option of probating or banning accounts. When an account or post is flagged, there is a group of people who can review it. From what I can tell, this site is putting all that on one person. It’s unbelievable really.

+1 Rick… Yeah a site this size needs several moderators. And I noticed the TOS hasn’t been updated since 2008, maybe it has and hasn’t been notated as such, but if that is the case, even after adding captcha I’m surprised it took this long for spam to become a problem. Security needs to be monitored daily on a site like this.

Although I’ve seen several spam comments, I have not been redirected or affected by this at all, and I’ve tried going to my profile, changing account settings, etc. I’ve tried all the problems that others are experiencing and haven’t been affected by a single one of them. The #1 thing you can do if you receive emails or think your account has been compromised is change your passwords for all associated accounts. I use Chrome with Adblock, Adblock plus and Norton Internet security. I’ve used many different virus protection programs and Norton does the best, hands-down. Norton isn’t the cheapest (i use the paid version here on my work puter), but all Comcast customers can get Norton Security Suite for free. I can’t do it now but I will fool around and see if turning off Norton has anything to do with it, as well as Adblock and script blocker. But since I’m a Comcast customer I have Norton on all 3 puters at home too. Dont get me wrong though I’m not saying that you should have to buy Norton to get around these issues, just trying to help out until some work gets done on the site.

7Footer – Norton, McAfee, etc. will protect your PC and help in detecting and blocking when you are being redirected by spam. It will also protect you from adware, viruses, malware etc., In my case as I mentioned earlier, McAfee stopped me from being redirected to a potentially malicious site. However, what it could not do was fix the problem because it did not exist on my PC. The problem and the redirection, was server-side. Only the LJ admins could fix that and they did.

Andy – Right, I know how they work, I know its a server problem and I didn’t say it will fix the problem, nor was I directing my comment at your situation. I was just trying to point out a couple of things that people might find helpful if they are still being affected.

I’ve got no idea what that is two posts behind me because I’ve turned off plug-ins when I visit LJ until the problem is fixed.
Don. I do! I’ve got one loaded for snakes, leaning up against the wall behind the front door. But I haven’t figured out how to plug it into the computer to fix these spammers….

Don – I don’t remember that, but I do remember when spam came in a tin.

It looks like the problem of seeing all those new spam members has been solved. The link to “most recent” under the Jocks tab is gone. Problem solved!

To get a preview of where this can lead, take a look at the latest projects on the GardenTenders home page:

Charge a membership fee for Lumberjocks and big part of problem solved. $5 or so could be afforded by anyone but i seriously doubt spammers would pay it. consider it a cleansing fee

In the absence of having been told anything to the contrary, I believe Lumberjocks is still owned by Escalate Media.
I’ve visited their site before, but it never looked like it does now – go check it out – http://www.escalatemedia.com/

”Womensforum.com and Escalate are leading online advertising companies encompassing a number of owned and operated websites, an online advertising network and an affiliate network.”

I tried searching the escalate network blog for any reference to “Lumberjock”.
I was expecting some results, or no results, but, in fact, I got, and still get, ”The requested URL /blog was not found on this server.”
I wrote to them to report the error. Has it been fixed? No. Have they even replied? No.
Perhaps I should have used a woman’s name, since that seems to their primary focus.

If you’re wondering why I’m posting this interesting snippet of information on this thread – a thread related to advertising spammers – well, I couldn’t possibly comment.
