Jake, you might look at Acacia Hardwoods in Lubbock, but I have never purchased from them. If you care to go to Ft Worth, then Brazos and Sweeney are options. Mail might be your best bet. I ordered quarter sawn white oak from McKinney Hardwoods when I lived in NM and was happy with the price and quality. Finally, if you have a Lumber Liquidators near you, they sell unfinished flooring which might suit your needs. Good luck!

Jake, first off, welcome to Texas. Second, finding hardwood down here kinda sucks. As Art mentioned, mail order can be your best friend if you are willing to let someone else pick out your boards. I’m not in Midland anymore but when I was there, there was a decent spot in Big Springs (stones throw east out I-20) called “Harris Lumber & Hardware.” I haven’t been in there in years, but their website looks like it is still up and running. Not sure where you are coming from or what kind of selection you are used to, but they had a decent collection of the usual suspects (cherry, walnut & oak). Hope that helps!

Know nothing about area, except there are no forests close by when I drive through on I-20?
Don’t forget to check for any local sawyers milling urban trees on CL, or private ads at local woodworking store. Also Woodmizer site has search tool for potential sources.
Best Luck.

Jake,

Acacia Hardwood and Pantex Plywood are the best sources in Lubbock. They have everything you would need.

I used to live in Midland when I first started on this hobby. There used to be a place in Odessa of Business 20, that I was able to get some decent stuff from, but pretty sure they closed down. I occasionally was able to find some people selling decent lumber on craisgslist, but it was pretty few and far between. McCoys building supply in Midland is probably your best bet. They at least had knotty alder for a somehwat reasonable price. And a better selection of plywood than the usual home stores. I have no experience with the places in lubbock.

Have your say...
