Please help with Supermax drum sander 25-50 parallel adjustment UPDATE

Hey Jim,
I have the smaller version. The problem maybe the bolt that holds the drum against the vertical post. If that bolt is too lose, then the drum will lean in towards the left side. The problem is, if you tighten it too much, then it won’t lower itself without you having to punch the motor down and at times it drops in the middle of sanding and creates a mess. So, maybe tighten the bolt a little (if needed) and don’t turn the drum one full turn of (maybe half or less) and see if it will give you a better result. I basically have to run my wood twice at every lowering of the drum. On the second run, the board rotated 180 degrees.

Call Supermax/Laguna.

Take two blocks the exact same thickness and put them on belt all the way out and close. Use this to align the head.

Jim, I see a possibile after looking at the troubleshooting guide..have you checked the conveyer belt tension to make sure it’s pulling properly?

Jim, I’m in the same boat with my 25/50. I’ve got it close but I need to do a little more fine tuning. I’m going to try something like RedOak suggests. I’ve also had some trouble getting the belts on right. Thankfully I seem to have figured out that issue. I’ll get back to you with my next effort to level it out.

To get it close did you do anything besides what the manual tells you to do? Thankfully putting the belts on has not been a problem.

I wish I had a solution to offer; but, I don’t . I’m close to tossing my old Performax, and leaving drum sanding behind. My next sanding solution will be a closed-frame model; as I’ve had it with the ‘convenience’ of the open-side models.
The simple fact is that I’d never entrust a wide workpiece to the conveyor belt, the usually-under-powered conveyor motor; and the unlikely probability of yielding a properly sanded middle (of the workpiece). —As you can gather, I’m not a fan of this design.

I hope the LJ members can provide effective guidance.

I have had cautions from other very experienced woodworkers about buying an open-ended sander but saw very good reviews on the 25/50 and made the investment,so only time will tell if I can get my supermax to work properly or not,the other thing that I was not thrilled about was the fact that Laguna purchased supermax a company that I’ve had issues with in the past and have not had a good reputation re its customer service.

Supermax gets their share of great reviews – both for Customer Service and functionality. I would have chosen the Supermax over the Powermatic, if I was in the market. That Laguna bought them is … very disappointing.

Jim, A good tip I found here on LJs is to just lock down the usual adjustment nuts and shim the conveyor table with thin strips of metal (soda can). Your manual, figure 12, shows the nuts that hold the conveyor to the table. Sand two strips of wood at the same time, one at the inboard edge and one outboard. Measure the difference in thickness. In you case of the outboard end “sagging”, add the difference as a stack of shim material between the conveyor flange and table (loosen the figure 12 nuts, place shims, then retighten).
This is a lot less difficult then dealing with the factory tilt system and the associated backlash when you tighten it back down.

I just wanted those who are interested an update as to what looks like a great solution for getting your open-ended sanders adjusted to sand evenly, each step may not work for every brand of sander but the electrical measuring seams like a great approach This link was sent to me by BurylBob Thanks again Bob.

I tried a ton of things on my Performax 16-32 including converting to an anti-backlash nut setup for the adjuster, following different online guides and a touch light system similar to the link above.

At the end of the day, there is just a little too much play possible when tightening the bolts down after trying to set the bed parallel.

So I shimmed the conveyor bed as noted by splinter above and all the pain went away. My post is here. This is almost foolproof and you can easily get the conveyor bed parallel to the drum easier and fairly accurately than any of the other methods using the factory adjustment process.

On a side note, After getting the conveyor set parallel to the drum, I now know that the drum itself has a concave profile with items going through the middle being 3 or 4 thousandths thicker than items towards the ends of the drums.

Thanks for that info Mike, that’s a great approach I had already used some shims on my sander before getting the last tip Bob had given me, but the way I was measuring wasn’t accurate enough to get good results. You were pretty creative with your approach and unique shims.
