What always baffles me is someone actually did the work on that stuff….... I get they probably just did it to get paid but an idiot designed it then 30 more people behind him helped him build it

When I was taking architectural design classes many moons ago, one of our instructors used to say that architects design, builders figure out how to put it together. He was focused more on making things look pretty.

Another instructor, whose piece of advice I’ve followed for the rest of my life, used to say “Form follows function. Make it work first, then make it look good.”

The second instructor, however, also told us a story about a famous architect who answered the question about why the skylights in his new building all leaked. He looked the examiner in the eye and said “Because it’s raining.”

As an engineer who has worked for architects for years, I can only say that we always try to get the engineering issues at the beginning the meeting agenda. That way we don’t have to waste time and budget discussing carpet color, paint chips, light refraction and ceiling texture.

Without engineering architects’ designs would mostly end up as piles of random construction materials laying around the countryside!
