I have both and prefer the smaller one, fits my hand better and just feels better in use.

Yeah, I think the only difference you’re gonna find is from person to person vs. some objective way to measure a difference in performance. The 40 1/2 weighs 2.5 pounds, the 40 weighs 2.125 pounds – not significant as far as I’m concerned, especially when you use it and then go to a bench plane.

I own a 40 1/2 but have used a 40 and I’ve never thought – oh boy, look at all the additional wood I can get rid of with the 40 1/2!

The only reason I own a 40 1/2 is because I found one for cheap and where I live, scrub planes simply do not show up at flea markets and estate sales so I bought it. If I had seen a 40 instead, I would have bought that.
