Really need to know what you have to work with so cleaning up the boards first is a must. Many people (including me) will pressure wash (using a wide spray pattern) reclaimed boards to remove the dirt and grime, but not the patina. Works really well. Lean them up vertically to dry for 12 hours minimum.

Get a metal detector and scan for any hidden metal before doing any machining.
