What size are you looking for and do you need a jointer and planer or specifically just a jointer?

Buying a used jointer is one time where the buyer has the advantage. Because you can inspect the tables for flatness and coplaner.
You should be able to get New jointer in the 8 inch range for less then 3500. What color do you like they all come from China or Taiwan. I doubt there much difference in quality.
The best deals are in the used market.

If you want to buy a “forever” machine, the Grizzly G0634XP – 12” Planer/Jointer with Spiral Cutterhead should do you.
It’s a combo machine, 5hp, 220V, for just under $3000 including freight. Not effected by the tarriff so likely made in Taiwan but Grizzly is good about quality in their big machines. This is what I’d buy, personally.

Am I not going to see much of a difference in quality between the jet grizzly powermatic machines? I looked at the hammer jointer planer a little more than I want to spend and reviews are mixed. Minimax is too much $ for me. There isn’t much out there on the grizzly jointer planner..I have been going around in this circle for months.

Good machine. Unfortunately, I think people have now been waiting upwards of a year to get one.

I’m surprised, I have the jet jjp-12hh and am very pleased with it. I had a grizzly 6 inch jointer I sold before getting it and would say it is definitely a higher quality than the grizzly.

What were the problems you saw with the Jet? Perhaps it was just a bad machine.

I had read mostly poor reviews of most combo machines and had been looking at keeping them seperate.

I ended up with the hammer 12” combo with helical head at round 4200 it is above your max but it is definately a solid machine. The only regret i have with a combo machine is that going back in forth is a pain if you are working on small projects.

That being said if you were to go Jointer only Id say go a minimum of 8”

The jet was in rough shape. First I could not get the jointer up the bolts that latch the jointer top down were unaligned in such a way that that they caught on the hole they go into. Called CS they told me to file the holes to allow space. Did that got it opened up. There where a handful of bolts and a piece of the cast iron hinge laying on the planer bed. Figured they could just send me a new top of the machine..got the plug wired turned it on and it did not power up. There is no way it should have gone out in that condition. No quality control what so ever. My father in law has the machine and really likes it. But the way the machine arrived really turned me off. For right around 4500 I expected more.

Have your say...
