I wish the washington Dc area had deals like that. Ive been specifically searching for 8” jointers here for the past 6 months. They are all over priced. as a matter of fact there are two DJ-20s on the DC craigslist page at this time and they are both going for around $1400. WAY TOO MUCH MONEY. in fact they are so overpriced, its not even worth trying to haggle with the sellers. I dont think they realize that you can pick up a new Powermatic for just a few hundred more.

Not in Dallas either.
Very few woodworking tools show up here and when they do they seem to want to charge extra for the rust.

We have a LOT of woodworking stuff here in the Portland/Seattle area which keeps prices low. For other stuff prices are ridiculously high.

Ya its a 50/50 thing here in Vegas. Some of it is priced like its new, some good deals.
I have done all my table saw upgrades off craigslist.
I picked up the older style woodpecker router lift a few years ago for a $100.
And got a biesemeyer fence for $150 and a saw stop cast iron wing for $20. Both last year.
Managed to turn a POS saw into a pretty nice tool for a good price.

You find a few deals but a lot of kooks. Legit deals are gone in minutes. But kooks will drag it out, 20 emails later and they still can’t find time to meet. Or they won’t be home. Or the picture was taken 5 years ago and it’s been sitting outside since. Or you get there and he sold it. Or they cat and mouse with the address. CL here is a full time job for deal hunting.

Good deals can be had on CL… but not any better or worse than what you can find at garage sales, estate and other local auctions, social networking (friends and relatives), your local electrical co-op buy-n-sale pages, etc…

Yeah…. Most of my CL steals, err deals, have been for
25% (or less) of new retail….
I’ve earned a whole bunch of… ”You Suck!!!”

Several years ago I got several machines for free. His dad had given them to him and he wanted to buy new so was giving them away. No one responded except me, probably because it sounded like a scam, lol. But the great deals are only 1/50 calls.

You must have missed the $650 8” grizzly that was posted the other week. I almost bought it, but don’t want to mess with 220. I don’t think it was up for more than an hour.

My area everything is gold plated, or you would think. A few try to sell the free HF junk at high prices. We have to look long and hard for a real deal.

Ditto here in Metro Detroit. $325 New – $300 well used… saw a Craftsman RAS for a mere $1500. I think (hope?) it was a typo???

The DC area (and adjacent cities) aren’t that bad if you just wait for stuff to pop up.

I picked this up for $400 two weeks ago

In fact most of my stationary shop machinery was purchased off of CL

CL in Dallas seldom has anything worth buying advertised.
I still check it fairly regularly though.

CL in Phoenix has tons of wood working tools listed, but it takes a lot of effort to watch for deals as many think they are selling gold plated tools.
Biggest problem in Arizona is that any great deals will last less than 30 minutes after being posted. :(
There are too many woodworkers in area, and worse some make hobby money by refurbishment or resale of cheap used wood working tools.
If you do not have Cl email alerts set for things you want, you have to be really lucky to get the great deals.

I can not tell you how many times I have called about the $300 cabinet saw that popped up, only to learn I was caller number 3-5 and ad was only posted 30 minutes previous. :(
Another frustration with local scavengers/resale artists is when you ignore the $150 6” jointer, and then see same machine serial number plate listed a couple days/week later for double the price, and it sells in a few days.

Wheeling and dealing used equipment is all about timing and location ….

-- I'm an engineer not a woodworker, but I can randomly find useful tools and furniture inside a pile of lumber!
