I think it would look great in cherry or walnut, but if you are after the lighter color like shown maple might be the better choice. You can have your hardwood dealer surface the rough beech stock two sides (S2S) to 13/16” if you ask them. Have them straight line cut one edge and you will be all set.

It’s a bit fussy to do, but if you must laminate
for the legs you can can make the leg blanks
undersized and then “veneer” them with 1/4”
thick faces mitered on the corner.

That design looks similar to the entertainment center I built for our living room. However, mine is just simple pine panels from the big box store stained with Rustoleum KONA.

I ended up picking up some soft maple and a board of curly soft maple for the top. Thanks all for the input.
