It’s a photo bucket issue. It has nothing to do with LJ’s. You will have to take it up with photobucket.

It it possible to fix the photobucket images issue?
- HoneyDew

Sure… send them a bunch of cash so your images can be linked to from third party sites. Won’t fix other peoples images though.

Brad

It is impacting LJ because posted images don’t show – and there are direct links from LJ to support photobucket. I’m thinking LJ should make the arrangement or not allow it.

Others thought???

And every other web site on the planet. It’s photobucket, period, and there isn’t anything LJ or any other web site around the globe can do about it.

I agree, HoneyDew. Asked LJs to do that some months ago.

Hey Brad – looks like you got some computer tech background – and you know that most of the top tier websites don’t have this issue – this issue is to be expected of more enthusiast sites I’ll grant that. But LJ has almost 1/4 million participants as advertised.

Since LJ is part of the VerticalScope.com portfolio I was really hoping to point to them for advancement in this area.

And to be very clear – I really appreciate this site and the participation and involvement by those (like yourself) that have invested time and efforts to encourage and share.

There’s really nothing that can be done at this point. The photos from Photobucket are posted by users and most forums allow third party photo posts. Photobucket screwed a ton of forums and websites when they made this change a few months back.

LJ doesn’t own the images, why should LJ pay an extortion price for other people’s pictures?

Only one way to fix it. Everyone who posted photos here on LJ’s pay 399.99 to Photo Bucket

Completely untrue. Every site that allowed third party hosting of pictures were effected, regardless of size. Would you consider PC Magazine an ‘enthusiast’ site? Here are some other views from around the planet:

Photobucket Is Holding People's Photos For Ransom – Buzzfeed

Photobucket broke a decade’s worth of online images, and other tales – Vox

Has Photobucket Painted Itself Into a Corner? – Technewsworld

Photobucket says photo-f**k-it, starts off-site image shakedown – TheRegister

... a quick google will turn up hundreds more …

Cheers,
Brad

My issue is that the link is still being displayed for photobucket – like on this discussion post and LJ keeps displaying photos that are referencing photobucket (that have a URL to photobucket.) I didn’t know about the pb policy change but it doesn’t change the point that LJ can do something about it.

Imgur is pretty easy to use and I figured out how to transfer all my photos from scumbucket.
It’s so irritating to click on an older link that has some great info only to face the blanked out pics.

I wouldn’t expect the moderators to go through and edit tens of thousands of posts to remove Photobucket references. I think I can somehow eventually learn to deal with this profound tragedy. Maybe, with the proper counseling, you could too.

PB can keep their stuff. I deleted my account and moved on. Everything that was in my account was a copy of images on my computer so nothing was lost. There are still a couple of websites I visit that don’t allow images to be directly uploaded so they don’t get any helpful info from me.

If LJ removes all links to photobucket, what about some sorry sucker who already paid the photobucket ransom?! I guess you could say he would be doubly photophucketed.

This is a computer system right – and it has databases behind it and skilled people can program it. It’s run by a company. So Agreed no one person should spend time on it.

BTW These comments don’t have anything to do with worry or tragedy or counseling – it’s just how to make it better.

Photobucket is still a perfectly valid option for those who want to use it. As already mentioned, if a user decides they want to pay the ransom to allow their images to be seen, then they will continue to work as usual. For those who don’t want to pay, those images are broken. I’m not sure what you think LJ or any other web site could actually do about it. If you remove all image links pointing to PB, then those who have paid will be penalized. Is that what you are suggesting?

Cheers,
Brad

As someone who worked in the digital field for the past decade, that would be an enormous undertaking. Anyone who has done any DB editing knows you cant just do a find and replace, click a button and assume everything will work fine. Not on something of this scale at least. Total waste of time and resources.

LJ admins, you’re doing a swell job and I can handle scrolling past broken image links from time to time.

If I see a picture I want, I simply right click, on that menu choose “Save As” and put it wherever I want it on my Computer.

If I want to put that or any other picture on here, I hit the IMG button above. Then hit “insert this image” DONE!

If I’m putting it on another Site I right click again choose the appropriate option for that site and on it goes!

I used PB YEARS AGO. To Complex and a pain in the BUTT!

Is there a particular reason that some people on here don’t want download to their own Computer? Maybe they can’t Alter the photo as the have no Photo “Fixer Upper”?

I use “FastStoneImageViewer” to clean them up (Very Easy) close it out, then retrieve it any time I want to.

Like This One, it took about 20 seconds to do get it on here.

Only because the imgur app on my phone gives me instant access to my pics so I use it as kind of a repository for my pics. If imgur goes the way of PB then I’m just SOL. But I can live with that.
