The lighter colors that you are seeing are sapwood, just under the bark of the tree. You can see it getting darker as it goes toward the center of the tree.

The whole face of the board is the same color. It’s a quartersawn piece so even if I see under the bark towards the darker heartwood on the end grain, the face of the board should be changing colors as well. It’s uniformly one color.

I will venture to say you have a piece of butternut.

I agree that it might be butternut.

Another possibility is English walnut which can be pretty variable in color ranging from very dark to pretty light. When I lived in the Mid Atlantic region I sometimes found some in the SE Pennsylvania sawmills that was that color. It is a nice wood to work with and very pretty IMO.

Then again I have seen black walnut that was lighter in color than usual (and not heart wood), so I can’t absolutely rule that out.

I wish I could find English walnut and butternut here in or near Tallahassee, but wood selection is pretty limited here.

Pete, I got butternut from Badger Hardwoods of Wisconsin. They were great to work with over the phone and shipped via UPS. They select some really nice stuff for their 20 bft bulk packs!

Nothing about that looks like the walnut in my neck of the woods Charles. I’d go with maple based on the pics. Possibly oak or ash. Close up of the face grain might help narrow it down. Hickory and butternut are possibilities I think but I’ve never seen curl like that in either of those. Whatever it is, that’s some pretty figure!

I am going to attach a photo of the rough, unplaned side and an up close photo of the pores with the obligatory shop nickel in the picture for frame of reference.

I have been leaning to butternut but I have absolutely no experience with it. I don’t think it’s hickory. I have some here in the shop and it’s much lighter color and the tones of brown are not golden like this.

The picture is not showing very good the exact color but I have a couple other boards of this. I don’t know if they’re figured the same but the rough sawn wood looks the same.

Looks like walnut grain to me. Color too in that pic. I’ll hedge and go with Butternut but I wouldn’t rule walnut out after seeing those last pics.

That’s what has me stumped. It looks like it should be walnut except for the dang color. I’ve seen some walnut which is fairly light but not like this. Oh well, will make for some beautiful pen blanks, haha.
