Good to hear Jim. We need more quality instructors.

Same here. Link to FB doesn’t work. It just goes to a search page in FB with no results.

If that doesn’t work here’s the name of the group on Facebook

New Woodworkers Help group by Artistic Wood Studio’s woodworking instructor

I guess you need to be on Facebook for it to work

Congats!!! yes to what you said, Facebook will reach “our” generation. As a woodworker, working with the current generation in the school system-
FaceBook is passe. They are into other photo site’s such as Photo chat and others.
15 years ago- the younger generation left “My Space” because the “Older pepole” jumped onto it….
Enjoy

Jim:

I’m holding-out. About 6 months ago, my resident grandkids (now 16 & 11) succeeded in getting me to ‘graduate’ into an iPhone – from my beloved, sorely-missed flip phone.

For what it’s worth, I’m more into getting off the grid, than being more connected to it. Having said this, the world would be a lesser place if teacher like yourself were to go silent…

Congratulations. I just joined your group (KC Stone). I hope you have great luck with your group. I found the FaceBook crowd to be quite “snarky”. Not nearly the quality of people here at Lumberjocks. I hope your experiences are better than mine. Your website is very nice….I enjoyed paging through it.

Funny, I don’t use Facebook and I am young enough (31) that folks usually assume I do. I use Lumberjocks and the ibuildit forums, plus email and some YouTube, but that is about it. I have problems with spending too much time on media sources, so I have to watch myself when it comes to these sorts of things. Best wishes in your new endeavor!

I just can’t get myself into the idea of using facebook. Instagram has seemed to be good enough for me to I guess microblog but I have a bad taste in my mouth with what facebook wants for personal verification.

When I tried it before they asked for my cell # which I never give out to any online company. So, in lieu of that they said I could send a scan of my driver’s license or passport…After I refused they locked my account.

This was not a scam or some fake email. This actually was on facebook.com through their verification.

From then on, I had no desire to use it again.

I am sure I’m really missing out on marketing but that seemed way too invasive. Has anyone else had that come up or is it just normal to be registering with cell phone numbers for everything now?

It is not the Facebook I worry about…it is what sneaks along behind it. Trying to get inside my computer’s files..

Everytime my GrandBRAT Diva shows up at my computer, and gets on HER account….I wind up doing a full scan, defrag, reboot, just to clean out the junk left behind…even with an ad-blocker working.

Kinda the same for me. I have had a facebook account for quite a while but never used it. But I made the mistake of buying a 3d printer and facebook seemed to have the best group for my printer. Well ^&%$$#! So I have been active on it for a few months now, but saying I HATE the interface is putting it mildly.

FB is truly the Devil. First, I’m a degreed EE and worked in systems and networks my entire career. When my wife goes searching around on the web for apartments for her friend who wants to downsize into a studio or one bedroom, and suddenly FB delivers me one of those horizontal add strings of local small apartments, it ain’t a coincidence. She doesn’t even have a FB account, but probably one of the searches led to a FB page for a local apartment building, where they grabbed the IP address and delivered the ads to me when I got on with the same one. They’re watching everything you do.

Of course, so is the NSA, Google, Amazon, and probably 50 other entities, so you can either unplug and put on a tin hat, or just live with it.

Jim,

I’m back. Read an on line article that said the younger people are leaving Facebook in mass while 50 and older have just now been flocking to it. Kinda like LJ’s LOL!

I’m a big YouTube fan as I get to watch people with talent. Have a video editing program but it requires time practice and patience, and I have aged since I use to do video work.

I’m not thrilled with the interface either Wayne not sure how long I’ll stay active there.
Sounds like you know more about FB workings than I do Rich, it seems like most sites track what you have been shopping for not really an issue for me since I forgot where I saw something I wanted (old age) so for me, it can be helpful.
Hi Tom
interesting point, I’m glad to be included in the 50s age group :) I like Youtube too. lots of good stuff on there covering lots of categories, some of them don’t have a clue what they’re talking about but welcome to the world of online searching.

I’m not a fan of FB either Jim, but for your purposes it is probably a very good move. My son’s advertising agency has an employee dedicated to creating and maintaining media sites including facebook for his clients. There may be some negatives involved, but that is true of most every other way of getting the word out. I hope it will be a success for you.

Mike I have found it’s not as bad as I thought there are lots of groups that are just woodworking involved and local tool for sale sites too. My opinion before I joined was that it only had posts of people saying things like look at my new shoes or I just mowed my lawn and folks putting lots of likes after those post :) There’s some of that kind post going on but you don’t have to participate if you don’t want to.

To eliminate having to see ads, find the AdBlockPlus app and install it. Works wonders! (In Chrome, look for “extensions” in the settings and search for the app; in Firefox, look for “add-ons” in settings and search for the app.)

It’s like magic!
