Glad you posted this…there is a “strange” tree, well strange for these parts at least, on my mother-in-laws property. I had no clue what it was and wondered for some time what this thing is. Tempted several times to cut it down and get rid of it. Now I know…it’s an Alder tree. Not sure which variety, but it looks just like the one pictured on the link. Strange looking “acorns”, exact same leaves, the works. Never seen another one around here and certainly no one uses it for lumber, there aren’t any here, well, except for this one.

Visiting Seattle this weekend I saw a sign for “alder smoked salmon” and nearly took a picture to post here for The Fridge.
The alder obsession is ridiculous because when a newcomer asks a question, people have to post explanations of why half the responses are “Alder. 100%”.
