Penetrating stain/oil on exterior poplar doors?

I would use a dye to get the color you want and then finish the doors with blend of BLO and spar varnish and mineral spirits in equal measure. Use a quality spar varnish such as Epifanes from a marine supply. That will give you an oil blend finish that will be easily renewable without having to strip the old finish off and will be more durable than a straight oil finish.

Dyes do not hold up well exterior , noted exception to Metal Complex dyes ( man made pigments )
The only one i know of that say their dyes can be used exterior is WD Lockwood
look under water base dyes and find the Metal complex color chart , they are powder and you simply mix with water .
As for a finish, after some pretty drastic finish failure using a spar varnish , i totally agree , I dont want a film finish .
One finish I tested over a 3 year period was called One Time , its an oil finish,
It can be easily recoated and maintained ….

Hey Charles, what about roofing tar mixed with mineral spirits?

Somebody told me about that once LOL.

My research is leading me either to epifanes varnish mixture with stain and linseed oil, or straight up sikkens cetol. I’m leaning towards sikkens.

that makes for a great stain, its called Asphaltum
never tried it on exterior .
