Not knowing what design ideas you have already makes it difficult to start or critique.

It sounds like you need a design where you have two pieces of thin Picture frame glass (much thinner than window glass) and a thin spacer between the two sheets of glass to accommodate viewing from both sides. You might also consider some thin acrylic panels that would be lighter in weight and less likely to break. In that case the best way to make it so you can exchange the pictures is to fit one end of the lid with a slot or removable end piece that gives access to the pictures. This removable piece could be held in place with some small rare earth magnets.
Hope that gives you a start.

Maybe LesB was thinking something like this…. (forgive my lack of sketchup skills). This would be just the lid part.

There are many sources for photo glass, acrylic, plexi glass, and rare earth magnets of all sizes, but fyi Home Depot carries all of those things. I’ve made a few small boxes for christmas using rare earth magnets and standard washers in the lids. I’m not sure what size your trying to build, but if the pull strength of the magnets is appropriately matched, then you wouldn’t need to glue/attach the glass in any way. That would make changing the photos easier.

Walker – what a great idea! I don’t think I would have considered an assembly like that.

Walker and LesB – yes, strong magnets can be very effective. I really don’t want to use Plexiglas. There are some glass vendors local that can probably hook me up with something with ground edges for safety. This really opens up options.

Many thanks all!

Walker caught my idea with a good illustration.
I would have drawn it but I’m lazy.
