My favorite water based wood paint is black dog salvage paint. stuff is amazing! super easy to put down. You can infinitely mix colors to get exactly what you want, easy to clean up. Great matte finish right out of the can.

For protection, be sure to use the “guard dog top coat”. The top coat is equally fantastic.

I won’t paint would with anything else after trying this. One of the main uses I find it works best on is painting wood and then relief carving on my CNC, to expose the raw under underneath. Instant two color sign!

The Black Dog Salvage only comes in matte or satin. That would be a problem for me.

What about milk paint with a gloss top coat? I did two children’s desks in a red milk paint, then coated them with gloss wipe on poly. They’ve stood up for a couple of years so far.

gwilki, what you suggested is exactly what I decided to do. I just ordered the General Finishes milk paint in Holiday Red. I have become a big fan of their Milk Paint. It goes on very well, flattens wonderfully, never skins over in the can, and cleans up easily. I think i’ll just move to Milk Paint for my paint needs.
