Dining table top thickness

Charlie, I am no expert so take this FWIW. I have made table tops between 0.75” and 1.25”. I think 0.75” is too thin to my eye. Others have made them 2-3” thick when using a slab. Some of it depends on the look/style you want to achieve and what looks right to you and your client. Draw your design full size or make a mock up from cardboard to help you visualize the finished product.

3/4” is okay if there is an apron around the perimeter. Otherwise I prefer 7/8” or 1” tabletop thickness.

Some people would absolutely prefer a thicker table top. But the issue in my mind is the added weight. If a thick table causes it to be so thick that it can’t be easily moved, then it could be problematic. On the other hand, some folks don’t care about that particular problem, and they like the durability of a thick (over 1 inch of thickness) top.
