Not sure what you mean by “Partly dead and alive” but I assume that the wood is still somewhat green. I usually put boiled linseed oil or orange shellac on my products. Linseed oil is great on canoe paddles as it will not cause blisters like varnish; it does have to be renewed occasionally, though. I don’t see this as a problem as it is applied with an old rag and just let sit.
Another solution to try is “Wood Butter” which is made of mineral oil (4 parts) and bees wax (1 part). Put the bees wax in a container in a pot of water and melt it; warm the mineral oil and add to the melted bees wax; then pour into jars. I’ve used it on turnings so far and like the feel. I don’t think it would hurt your green wood. Will need to be re-applied occasionally as the wood dries, but again is no problem as it is put on with a rag.
